William Fletcher born 1799 Marple
« on: Sunday 11 May 14 20:48 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a William Fletcher born 1799 Marple who died 13th May 1854 at Stockport Workhouse. On the 1851 census he's residing at Stockport Union Workhouse occupation Boatsman. However I can't find any record of him in 1841. He could possibly be the father of a Joseph Fletcher who I also can't find in the 1841 census. He was born abt 1822.
If anybody can find him in 1841 I'd be grateful.

Thanks

Joseph Fletcher
christening:   22 February 1822   FORMERLY MILL BROW INDEPENDENT,
MARPLE BRIDGE,DERBY,ENGLAND
father:   William Fletcher
mother:   Mary

"MARPLE and MARPLE BRIDGE, commonly called Upper and Nether Marple, (Nether Marple, or Marple Bridge, being situate in the county of Derby), form a chapelry in the parish of Stockport, about five miles E.S.E. from that town, and 12 from Manchester. The spinning of cotton, bleaching, and calico printing, are carried on to some extent in the chapelry and neighbourbood, and upon the river Goyt are some corn mills."

Hi Genechaser

Thanks for your reply. I expect this May be my Joseph but could do with finding him with William in the 1841 census. There is a possibility I won't of course. The William in the 1851 census is a Boatsman. Joseph was listed as a Waterman on his wedding certificate in 1845, father William. I believe Joseph dies in 1849 as there is a burial in nearby Hyde of a Joseph aged 27. And his wife is a widow by the 1851 census.
Just can't find them both in 1841.

Hi Olie,

Did you notice that on the 1851 census William states that he is unmarried ???
So is it possible he's not your William?
Do you know who he married?

Sorry Ollie another question :)

Is this Joseph Fletcher the same one who married Elizabeth Martin in this post of yours

If so then his father William is listed as a labourer

Hi Rolnora

Yes is it. Didn't realise the William in the 1851 census was unmarried. Unlikely to be the father of my Joseph then. Brick wall springs to mind.

Brick walls are there to be knocked down ;D and there are lots of people here ready to help you
Are you completely sure that this Joseph and Elizabeth are yours?
Could you tell us how you traced back to them?

Hi Rolnora

Your right but it feels like a long time since I've managed to progress with Joseph & William.

How I get to Joseph.

Grt grandfather Robert Fletcher (b.Compstall 1874-1918)
His father Uriah Fletcher (b. Staleybridge 1853-1935) on his birth cert his mother is Elizabeth.
His sister is Mary Fletcher (b Marple 1846)

Elizabeth is on censuses with Uriah & Mary before she re-marries. Her birth is 1819 in Tansley, Derbyshire

Elizabeth nee Martin & Joseph Fletcher marry in 1845 in Cheadle, Cheshire. Residence is Bosden. There is a Bosden near Marple. Around 1 mile away.

Thanks

Uriah's birth was registered in 1853 not 51 with mother's maiden name Fletcher.
So Elizabeth was a widow when he was born and this explains the absence of his father's name.
1861 and 71 census show Elizabeth now wife to William Gregory.
Do you have that marriage cert?
The only marriage that I can find to fit is in 1856 at St Paul's Church in Portwood. Is that correct?
The only 1851 census that I can find shows an Elizabeth Fletcher and 4 year old Mary living with Elizabeth's sister Mary Birchnough and her husband Samuel.
Elizabeth gives her birthplace as Matlock.
I know that none of this is helping you with Joseph and William but the more we know the better.
