Place names on 1851 census - 'Corwen'
« on: Tuesday 11 February 14 19:33 GMT (UK) »
On the 1851 census it gives the birthplace as 'Corwen' for one of my ancestors living in Chester.

I think it's quite likely however that he was born in Ruthin, or more specifically Llanrhydd, but my question is: is this possible if the birthplace is given as Corwen? Did Corwen refer to a broad area, or perhaps more recognisable to an English-speaker? There is a possible record for Corwen, however Llanrhydd is more likely and is the parish specified on his military record.

Any views would be appreciated!

Try Merionethshire!

CORWEN, a parish and market town partly in the hundred of Edernion, in the county of Merioneth, and partly in the hundred of Isaled, in the county of Denbigh, North Wales, 10 miles N.E. of Bala, and the same distance from Llangollen. It is situated under Berwyn Mountain, on the river Dee, and includes the seaport of Barmouth, and the extra-parochial liberty of Gwern-Howell, besides 12 townships The town of Corwen, which is said to signify "white choir," is a pretty little place, containing less than 1,000 inhabitants, situated on an eminence on the S. bank of the river Dee.

Hi

Always check Genuki before anything  else  :)

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MER/Corwen/index.html

I have ancestors from that area and have some (most) of the BMD records for that and neighbouring parish(es)  so if you can list the names maybe we can look them up.

But much more by road, etc.

Kevin - do you know the area personally or are you just looking at maps?

Well why jump in when the OP was asking about the N Wales parishes. This might just confuse the issue.

No one who was born Ruthin or Llanrhyd (more or less neighbours) would say they were born Corwen.

No problem if it's a census request - anyone can do those - but knowledge of the local area is best left to those with local knowledge.

I went into  the Isle of Man once  :-X

No, Corwen did not refer to a broad area (IMHO), and apparently my views would be appreciated! ;D
