William Connell c1822 at Carmarthen 1899
« on: Saturday 20 September 14 14:58 BST (UK) »
My recent enquiry about William Connell c 1822 has led me to the report of his retirement in 1899.
At the retirement ceremony in Carmarthen, William was presented with his portrait painted by HENRY HOWELL of "THE STUDIO"
I'm wondering if Henry Howell was a local artist and if his work is known.
Please can anyone advise me?
Norman E

Just googled Henry Howell Carmarthenshire.  He comes up under GENUKI as having had a photographic studio at 7 lammas street, Carmarthen from 1901.  Possibly your man?  Sandra

Sandra that's brilliant. I had been puzzled why a group of railway men could afford an artist to paint a portrait, never thinking of a photograph. Also thinking it was strange for an artist to have an address "The Studio"
It all fits and you are absolutely right, Thanks very much.

Norman

Good.

I waded thru the article from the national library of wales that was under the genuki one.  He seems to have had a very big place on lammas street but was trading on Carmarthen street before that.

Thrilled that I could help.sandrda
