Here are some lovely old maps of Bristol.  http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/?maptype=js

Clifton lies to the west of the city centre, towards the River Avon.  Click on the different maps on the right and zoom in with the slider on the left.  You can see Portland Place on the northern edge of Clifton beside the open ground (1828 and 1855 Ashmead  maps are good)
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway

Good morning Joobles. It's great to start the day with a clear mind! I've had another trawl of the Bristol indices and found Prudence:
St Augustine the less baptisms:
31 Jul 1791 John s of Thomas & Mary KEYS
2 Aug 1795 Prudence d of Thomas & Mary KEYS

Also this marriage:
4 Nov 1790 Thomas Kayes & Mary Bragg botp banns

And these burials:
27 Nov 1832 Martha Kayes aged 37
11 Dec 1832 Mary Kayes aged 74

At St Andrews, Clifton, Burials:
10 Dec 1814 Grace CAIES aged 86
9 May 1819 George Kayes aged 74
14 Jul 1826

Sorry - not so clear mind; I pressed "Send" by mistake!

St Andrews, Clifton burials:
14 Jul 1826 Thomas Kayes aged 18
28 Jan 1821 William Bragge Kayes aged 1

I think these last two may be the children of Thomas & Mary's eldest son, John. I haven't found a baptism for the Thomas yet, but I found these at Clifton:
11 Sep 1814 Ann Chaplin d of John & Ann Kayes
29 Sep 1816 Emma Rosina d of John & Ann Kayes
6 Oct 1822 Mary Ann d of Charles & Charlotte Kayes
26 May 1819 William Bragge s of John & Ann Kayes

The use of Bragg(e) for the youngest links him & his parents to Mary Kayes nee Bragg, and I see your Mary Ann was baptised at St Andrews.

St Augustine the Less was a parish church on College Green, almost next to Bristol Cathedral (which is St Augustine the Great). It was badly bombed in the war and was demolished in the 1960s. I can remember the shell of the building very well when I was younger & my grandfather sang in the choir there in the early 1900s. The site is now part of the Royal Hotel complex

Morning Steve, well, you have been busy !!!

Lots of new info. for me to work with there, pity we still can't pin them down to a specific street !

With all the various spellings no wonder things become confusing sometimes  ::)

Thank-you so much for your time.

Julie

Thomas was in Portland Place (now part of The Mall) at least from 1837-41. He may have been there 15 years before. I don't know if licensing records exist that early, if so they would probably be at the Bristol RO. If Thomas was at the pub now known as The Royal Oak, it was called the St Vincent's Rocks Inn at that time I believe
