WW1 death - David Ferguson, b Kilmarnock
« on: Saturday 08 October 11 14:05 BST (UK) »
My gt. uncle David Ferguson was born @ 17 St. Marnock St.,Kilmarnock on Feb.14th,1894 and died in France in 1914. He may have been buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery plot 111; c 14 or have a plaque on the Menin Gate(plaque 11). These details were uncovered on the CWGC site.
How and where would he have signed up in Ayrshire and how do I find out which David I am looking for without having his service number?
Also were any of his relations listed beside him on the Kilmarnock Roll of Honour?

That entry was for D G Ferguson - did he have a middle name

I think you mean the Menin Gate

In both entries - the service number is shown on the CWGC website

Some 60% of WW1 service records were destroyed in the WW2 blitz

Thank you for correcting me.

There was no middle name attached on his birth certificate, but I wonder if he added it as his mother`s middle name was Guthrie.
As for the service numbers, unless you know them previously, you are up against the proverbial brick wall.
Still wondering where and how he signed up. I may have to look out a photograph of him to uncover his regiment on his cap.

Thank you once again for your timely reply.

How do you know he died in France in 1914?  If he did die in France then he won't be commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial - that's for those who died and have no known grave in Belgium.

Regarding the death in France. No concrete evidence, except a card which he sent to my grandmother (his sister) in Dec., 1914 and I was led to believe this was his last contact with her.
As for the deaths in 1916 - I still have to dig out his photograph to confirm his regiment.
Thank you both for the replies.

To junev
Why was there only one D Ferguson on the Kilmarnock Roll of Honour for WW1?

Hi,

don't know why only one on the Kilmarnock roll of Honour - the list only gives birth location perhaps one had moved when young and was therefore not included??
