What are their names, so we can look them up. Usually I would look at the addresses of the neighbours and try to work out an approximate location that way.

I found reference to Lunnoch in 1841approximately listed thus:
Lunnoch
Lunnoch Stable
Lunnoch Cottage
Welltrees Toll
Auchenwnd
Kilkenzie
Drumullan

Welltrees, Auchenwind and Kilhenzie appear to be places to the south south east (in that order) on the road heading out of Maybole, so presumably Lunnoch is slightly closer to the centre of Maybole than Welltrees, towards the south of Maybole. These places are on the NLS maps, but I haven't found Lunnoch yet.

No, I think that is incorrect. Prior to Lunnoch is:
Lochlands
Attiguin
Chapelton
Harkieston
These places are south of Maybole and run towards  the east, so Lunnoch may be somewhere south of where Heart Loch is today. It is difficult to give a better description as many of these small places no longer seem to exist. (and my PC is running really slowly so moving between maps is difficult)  ;)

Yes, that is the family I saw  mentioned in the 1841 census. In your first post you said they are living at Lunnoch cottage in 1851?

I am wondering if the enumerator's walk in 1851 will help locate Lunnoch cottage ....

Hi Jan,
I couldn't find Lunnoch Cottage, but there is a Tunnoch Farm just outside Maybole, on the Crosshill Road.  The farm access is opposite the cemetery, and the map ref. for the farm on OS Sheet 70 is (308098)

On the 1856 25" OS Sheet (XLV.5 Maybole), the farm is noted as Tunoch Farm.  Could Lunnoch be a transcription error on the census, or could the original mapmaker have transcribed Lunnoch, as Tunoch(sic)?  According to the 1856 map, the farm comprised three seperate buildings. Could these be the three mentions of Lunnoch noted in the 1841 census, (Farm, Cottage , and Stables).  A fourth property sits adjacent to the access road, .

A current aerial photograph seems to show all the original buildings still in place, but with some, more recent, additions, not bad for 160 years.

The Lochlands mentioned by Ruskie is the next farm along the road, approx 1km. to the east.

Regards,

Istrice

That sounds quite possible Istrice, especially considering it's location near Lochlands. I wonder if the only mention of Lunnock is in the 1841 census, then it is possibly a misinterpretation of Tunnoch. However you would expect the enumerator to be a local who who would know the name of the farm. :-\
Do the children's baptisms name Lunnoch/Tunnoch as place of abode by any chance? Or even Robert and Sarah's marriage?  :-\
