Clingan
« on: Monday 13 October 14 23:00 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of Glover Grace Clingan born October 1825 in Kirkpatrick, Kirkcudbrightshire. She married James Shaw, born 1818.  Her father possibly was John Clingan (married to Martha Heighle and Janet Wilson).

What year did she marry James Shaw?

There is an 1871 entry for a Grace Clingan b 1825 Kirkpatrick but she is unmarried and in service

She married James Shaw about 1843 in Scotland.  They moved to the US in the mid-1850's and both died in Wisconsin.  They had 11 children.  Some were born in Scotland and the rest in the US.  All moved to the US except William who died in 1854 and was buried there.

Thanks for the census information.  I do have the census but I am having trouble getting information on Glover Grace's (her name is shown both ways on things) parents.

Below is a reply I posted yesterday on the Boards at Ancestry regarding the Grace G Clingan.
Is this the same search? The original post was dated 10 January 2013.

Hi
I have just come across your post & may have some info for you.
There is a book of Monumental Inscriptions that relate to the Parish of Kirkpatrick Durham,in Kirkcudbrightshire,Scotland.
I believe that entry No121, shown below may relate to the parents of your Grace Glover Clingan.

John CLINGEN mason (in 1802) in Knockwalloch d 26.6.1853 81yrs.
imo dau Margt d 14.1.1802 13mths, dau Martha d 20.4.1802 4yrs.
Wife Martha HEIGHLE d 17.5.1802 33yrs,
2nd wife Janet WILSON d 9.6.1862 76yrs.
On the reverse of the headstone is the following.
O Death,Youth,Beauty,Virtue,Blooming Hope
Lies here,a Victim to thy Rage.
For here we lie,no human Skill
Nor Medicine could relieve,
Affliction long, with Spirit meek with Patience great we bore.
We lived in Love and died in Hope
To meet and part no more.
James SHAW and Grace CLINGEN, son William d 22.11.1854, 4 1/2 yrs.

Grace Clingan appears to be on the 1841 Census aged 15 with an Andrew Clingan aged 30.
Wonder if this is her brother - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYMG-C94 ?

This would tie in with Matt's great find.
Looby  :)

Yes, that was my posting and I did receive your note.  I have been trying today to find a definite link with the inscription that you sent but can't seem to find anything else that shows Grace as John's daughter.  The lists of his children don't seem to have a Grace or a Glover.  They have a Grissel but not with the right birth date.

I couldn't find the Monumental Inscriptions on line.  I was wondering if all of that information was on a headstone.  I'm sure that the James Shaw and Grace Clingen mentioned at the bottom is the right person but I don't have anything saying that she was indeed John's daughter and don't know which person would have been her mother.
