1871 Census Midlothian
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 07:52 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if there are any parishes missing from the 1871 census for Midlothian?
I have never been able to find John & Eleanor Brabner and their children. They were in Edinburgh in 1861 (South Leith parish) and 1881(St Cuthbert's parish) and I have searched all of England & Scotland previously. I have used various ways of searching e.g. first names only but with no luck.
Thanks for any help
Judith

Hi,
The Brabner's have a daughter in 1870 - Janet Brabner. Where is her address at birth?

Hi,

In "The Scotsman" newspaper, Apr 21, 1869  there is a list of Scotch (sic) Bankrupts: Sequestrations.
On the list is a John Brabner and his partner Robert Moodie of Brabner & Moodie Coachbuilders, to have a creditors meeting on 3rd May 1868. Their company address was Bellevue, Broughton, Edinburgh, which is quite near Gayfield Square and Hillside Crescent.

Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.

Hi,

He had another bit of misfortune, he got run over by a tramcar in Blenheim Place, Leith Walk on the 17th May 1873. However he settled out of court for £100 plus £17 10s expenses. His address on court papers was 9 Leith Walk, Edinburgh.

He went back into business as Brabner & Co Coachbuilders at 9 Leith Walk, but ended up in Edinburgh Bankruptcy court in 1884, having been sequestrated on 3rd December 1883.

Judith, maybe with all the addresses that Tom has mentioned, you could check the NLS PO directories www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Edinburgh to help you track further the family's addresses and movements.

I tried also finding them in 1871, but like you, have struggled.

Thanks to you all for your interest in my request.
I had come across the details of John's business difficulties but not his accident so that was interesting.
I don't have Janet's birth certificate so don't know the address at that time.
My interest is really to find the family together in the 1871 census but it looks like that may not be possible.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Judith,

I appreciate you are trying to find the family on the 1871 Census.
Janet Brabner was born on the 24th November 1870 -  the census was 4 and a half months later.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FQW9-18V
I would suggest you view her birth certificate for the address of the birth. That may help you locate the Brabners on the 1871.
They may be mistranscribed, or missing, or deliberately under a different name.

Hi All,

The address on Janet's birth certificate is 9 Leith Walk, so I think as they were at this address in 1973, they must still have been there during the 1871 census. John signed the certificate, and he was a Coachbuilder (Master).
