Janet Walkinshaw b 1820 Edinburgh
« on: Monday 21 April 14 21:46 BST (UK) »

Janet was the daughter of George Walkinshaw and Helen Sangster . I have found on F.S. she married John Price in 1842 in Edinburgh as yet no date for his death . She then marries Alexander  Webster in 1850 .
In 1861 she gives birth to a son Peter Cadgen and then goes on to marry his father also Peter Cadgen in 1863.

I am hoping someone can find her in the census for me .

Thank you

You have found them Monica ---  I have been searching for her for a long time trying to get Walkinshaw family a bit further on.
Janet went on to marry Peter Cadgen looks like he was her lodger and "toy boy"

Thank you.

Pretty sure it might be Monica as she is 7 years older than him on 1861 census and Jessie is a

variation of Janet . Cadgen is a very unusual name don't think it's Scottish.

Children possibly married by then.

Thanks once again,

Hi
Could it have been a second marriage for Alexander Webster as well? In 1851 there is an Alexander living in the Canongate age 44 a spirit merchant b Dalmeny , wife Janet is 34 b Edinburgh, daughter Janet  12 b Kirkliston and son James 5 b Edinburgh.

Looking at family search the only  baptism for a Janet Webster b 1839 in Kirkliston has Alexander Webster and Mary Laurie as parents.

SP shows an inventory for Alexander Webster spirit dealer of no 89 Canongate 19/02/1853.

The only Mary Price I can see is age 4 and listed with a younger brother Charles both said to have been born in London Middlesex and lodgers with a family named Black. Pure conjecture but might John Price have died in London?

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Hi folks,
Been reading through the thread so far. Do we think Janet is being ecconomical with the truth with her age in later Censuses?
If the Janet Webster with Alexander Webster on the 1851 Census was 34
she appears to have lost a year , age 33, when living with Peter Cadgen 10 years later on the 1861
and by 1871 she is 42. Lucky girl aging only 8 years in 20!
Going by the age 33 in 1861 this means she was approx 14 when she married in 1842 (not impossible I suppose)
Looby :)

Hi again.
Could this be Janet and her mother plus another relative (aunt perhaps :-\ ) on the 1841

Address - Jamaica Street, Edinburgh

Helen Walkinshaw        50                        Midlothian
Janet Walkinshaw        15   Dress Maker    Midlothian
Mary Songster            40   Female Servant Midlothian  - (spelling of surname as transcribed on Freecen)

Janet's age of 15 could mean she was any age between 15-19 , I believe, if they followed the rounding down age to the nearest 0 or 5 instruction given by enumerators.
Looby :)
