Tom, the reference source you are looking at is the Old Parish Registers (pre 1855). These are never conclusive. Just because you cannot find a relevant entry, doesn't mean it didn't happen. These registers are patchy with many lost over the years. Often for a family, if you are lucky enough to find entries for siblings, there can be gaps for some of the children. Only around 30-35% of births show in the OPRs for a wide range of reasons.

You can only work with the info you have. From what you have said, Alexander was very consistent about his birth being in the Furnace area, up to his death reg. by his son. I wouldn't assume he was born elsewhere just because you cannot find the entry on the OPRs.

Might be worth looking at the christening entries for Alexander and Mary's Scottish born children, just for clues really (names and places).

What about Mary Campbell? Have you been able to confirm her parents' names?

Monica

Tks Monica.......

Mary Campbell (Alexanders' wife) details are established with both her parents identified...but am yet to trace them further while I sort out her husbands ancestors first  ;) .

It's a task to identify the place names mentioned and their proximity to Furnace but the map links provided are making it easier....

The children's details all match with what is known of their parents origins so pretty sure Furnace is the main area to search with some mention of Glassary which is not far from there - something will crop up and we'll get there eventually - it's not the proverbial "brick wall" just yet so thanks for your support
