Dunbar/Henderson Family in South Africa - anyone connected?
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 10:43 GMT (UK) »
My 2x great-grandfather's sister, Barbara Henderson (born 21 May 1865 in Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire), emigrated to South Africa from Scotland in 1914 with her daughters, Catherine Sidney Wasson Dunbar (born 16 May 1895 in Glasgow) and Barbara Robison Henderson Dunbar (born 27 Aug 1899 in Govan, Ayrshire). Her second husband, Jeremiah John Dunbar (born 21 Dec 1872 in Girvan, Ayrshire) seems to have emigrated in 1903 (man with right name, age and profession anyway). He was a carpenter/joiner and I think I have found his death notice in 1958. I have a possible death in 1945 for Barbara from another researcher but no written proof.
In 1929 Barbara's son from her first marriage, Frank Gilligan/Henderson (born 13 Feb 1891 in Glasgow), his wife, Isabella Davidson (born 1893 in Dumfriesshire), and son, Thomas Francis Henderson (born 1915 in Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire) emigrated to South Africa presumably to join them. Frank used the surname of his mother for most of his life. His father, Francis Gilligan, had died when he was a small child. He was a ploughman so perhaps he went to farm.
Does anyone have any information about what happened to them?
Thank you
Pauline

I have found the following:
The marriage of Isabella to George Davidson on 18 November 1912 in Durban. It is on familysearch, Africa, Natal marriages and is image 1557.

I have also found the following at the National Archives:

These are both in the Cape Archives so you would either have to employ a researcher to get copies for you or put up an appeal on rootschat for someone going there to help.

Thank you Nookie. I will have a look at the National Archives for Jeremiah and Catherine's notices. Do you know if the death notices are issued nationally or in the are they died in?
Isabella married Frank in Scotland and her maiden name was Davidson but thank you anyway.

Thank you for the link pompon. Isabella and Frank married in Scotland in 1914 just before his mother and half-sisters emigrated.

Death notices were issued for the area in which they died.  As both of these are held in the Cape Archives this would mean that they died in the Cape Province.  However the Cape Province is huge so they could have died anywhere in the region.  The only way of knowing where they lived is by obtaining their death notices.

Thank you it looks like I will have to obtain their death notices.
