Banfields in Kent
« on: Tuesday 01 July 14 17:01 BST (UK) »
I am looking for earlier information on William Banfield, born 1740, and John Banfield, possibly a brother, who had numerous children in Mereworth, Kent. William's wife was Ann. I have much information on their numerous descendants but would like to trace the tree back farther.

Don't know if this helps but I have found a reference for a Removal order of 28 November 1761 for a William Banfield, labourer & wife Ann from Henfield Sussex to Mereworth.

P217/13/4

Maybe a different area to search?

Thanks. Can you give me any more information on the removal order? That sounds very promising. Are you too a Banfield?

The removal order looks promising.

The William BANFIELD and family posted by Westfrem were all listed as born in the 1800s.  You need to check if this is a typo  ???

A John BANFIELD, farmer, of Mereworth was appointed constable in 1789

Ouch!!  :-[ :-[

Good spot Bearkat - that's what happens when you filter by the wrong century. Many apologies!!

But - the removal order is dated 1761.

The records for John & William I discovered before the slip of the finger are:
Baptisms in Woodmancote, Sussex
25 Mar 1734 John Banfield son of William
28 May 1735 William Banfield son of William

there is also a marriage at Woodmancote:
27 Mar 1733 William Banfield to Mary Grover
so could this be their mother?

Those are definitely dated correctly ;)

Thanks to both of you. I had William and his children in Mereworth. It had William b. 1740 but didn't say where. Thanks to Westfrem for the earlier notice and the updated information. That appears to get my family line a bit further back. By the way, a John Banfield and his wife also were in Mereworth and had children at the same time. William starting in 1762 and John in 1763. I assumed they must be brothers. This makes it look more as if they were, despite the listed birth date on William, 1740 vs.1735. Do you have any record of a removal order also on John Banfield?

And thanks to Bearkat. I did catch the mid-1800s but I was more interested in the 1761 removal notice.

My genealogy goes William to Samuel to Benjamin to Henry, who emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, to Alfred F. (to Kansas City, Mo.), to Henry, to Alfred T., to me, Alfred T. Banfield Jr., now in Bangor. Maine.

By the way, what is a removal order? And are either of you Banfields?

Details about settlements and removals can be found here

http://www.genguide.co.uk/source/settlement-certificatesexaminations-and-removal-orders-parish-amp-poor-law/173/

Here's a link to the Banfield removal order

It looks as though that is all that has survived.  If you put Banfield in the search box you can see what sort of information is given in a settlement examination. They can be very interesting and informative.
