clara eugenie marchant
« on: Monday 22 September 14 22:27 BST (UK) »
I would like to find this person before 1881.

In 1881 she is living in Ripple (b1857 middx) a few houses away from her future husband AlfredChapman (b 1854 Little Mongham).
I have a copy of their marriage certificate. They were married in 1883 Oct 26th in Ripple. Says both of full age. Alfred a labourer and father listed as Stephen - labourer. Clara has father listed as William Marchant - civil engineer. The witnesses are Frederick Crepin ( who later marries Alfred's sister) and Eleanor Hollis - ?

I would really like to find out more about her as family say she was French and my elderly relative pronounced the name as it sounds in French, without knowing how to spell it.

There is a Le Marchant family - but is there a link??
Any help would be grateful
thanks Jane

William 47 think occupation traveller born Middlesex
Emma 34 born Tiverton Devon
Alice 7 born Middlesex

I can't find an obvious marriage for William and Emma - also Minnie from 1871 is listed as sister on that census, but daughter in 1881 and 1891. She doesn't appear to be with them in 1861 and has the same place of birth as Emma (Tiverton 1871, Bath 1881 & 91)

thank you both It looks like its falling into place?!
I had seen the birth and the 1871 with widow Emma but could not link to the father if it was William. I had even tried to disprove all the other Claras by following them through census - impossible..
I was hoping a fresh set of eyes would help and the ability to search better than I. ( how do you do a diff spelling search?)

I wonder if living in the rectory as a servant of the rector of Ripple had influenced the baptism as an adult? Does this mean she wasn't baptised as an infant? or was she very ill and they did it just in case? or are there other reasons? or was she not c of e? do you have to be baptised before banns are read?

any how thanks again to you both
no French connection after all >:(

With that one Jane I just put in the first name Clara (no second name or surname) and her year of birth then looked at the options that came up to see if any had a surname similar to Marchant.
