William Irwin, merchant, of p. of St Margaret. Leicester
« on: Tuesday 29 April 14 11:09 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on William Irwin.

I know that he married Mary Crossley (1783-1871) on 4 Nov 1807 Brailsford, Derbyshire and that he is referred to as a merchant from the parish of St Margaret, Leicester.
I also know that he died on 12 Aug 1840 at the age of 68 which means that he was born around 1772 as his widow's memorial inscription states:
 William IRWIN, 12 Aug 1840, 68
Interred at St Margaret's Church, Leicester,
Mary, relict, interred in this vault,
25 Sept 1871, 88

William and Mary had two children (that I've found): William (1808-1883) and Selina (1822-1907). There's a huge gap between these two so there's a high probability that there were more children.

Does anyone have any clues on William's parentage and possible baptism records that may clear up this mystery?

There is a very long 1840 PCC Will for William Irwin of Leicester, Spirit Merchant, proved in 1841. Wife Mary. I haven't read it all but there is mention of a daughter Selina Crossley

The will is available to view for free if you have a sub to Ancestry; otherwise you could download it from the National Archives site for a small charge.

There's a couple of bits in the paper, creditors notice 1840 and Selina's marriage 1844, only had a quick look Notts and Derby.

I didn't find a baptism for William in the 5 major churches of Leicester
