India: Birth in Calcutta in 1929
« on: Wednesday 27 August 14 08:36 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone who would be able to help with a look-up?

I believe the actual birth date is 1 April 1929.

Marie Terese Olga Martins
Calcutta, Bow Bazar,St Francis Xavier, Bengal

Thank you,

Alan

Do not ask for look-ups from commercial sources.
Most commercial sources have strict 'Terms of Use', which forbid publishing their data elsewhere, so asking for such look-ups is also asking people to ignore the 'Terms of Use'.

Hi Nanny Jan,

Thank you so much.

Gosh, so, if I understand correctly, even if I'd bought a subscription, I wouldn't have found anything for this entry! And the official Calcutta records at https://www.kmcgov.in/KMCPortal/jsp/KMCBirthRecordSearch.jsp require the mother's maiden name, which I don't know.

Does anyone has any suggestions where to look?

Alan

Hi,

This is a very good site; you might get some help/advice from them:

Do you know the name of her father?  You could research a marriage.

There's a marriage in Calcutta (at St Francis Xavier) on June 20 1928:  Francis Xavier Martins 32 and Magdalene Veronica Austen Lewis 20. Fathers Xavier F Martins and Joseph Austen Lewis.

The images online are taken from the actual surviving registers deposited at the British Library at St Pancras. They are readily available to view there on microfilm.

The actual images online are subject to data protection policies so that baptisms are closed for 100 years although there are partial transcriptions.

Thank you very much Nanny Jan, ShaunJ and dawnsh.

The only other information I have is that her father was a Portuguese sea captain of noble descent who died at sea and her mother was half Indian/half Dutch.

However, the name I was given for her is "Maria Theresa Olga Ferrera Martin", so I'm wondering where the Ferrera comes from.

Sorry to ask stupid questions, but if I understand correctly, dawnsh, it would be possible to view the images (only) at the British Library at St Pancras?

yes, the registers have been microfilmed and are at St pancras. I think there are partial sets on microfilm elsewhere (possibly the Latter Day Saints) but it is better to go straight to the official depository.

If you decide to go, you'll need to register and get a readers ticket.

http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/inrrooms/stp/register/stpregister.html

Once you have that, you'll need to get to the Africa & Asia room on the 3rd floor.

The Bengal indexes should be consulted 1st to check the N reference and folio number, then you can find the appropriate film and look for the correct entry.

Once you have the entry you can take a photocopy which is 25p.

The staff are really helpful if you start to struggle with anything.

Hi Dawnsh,

Gosh the British library sounds quite daunting. I went to the national archives a few years ago, but judging by their website, you really have to go through an interrogation before they'll let you into the British library.

Can I ask one more possibly dumb question? Would the British records for this period and before include births, marriages, etc., involving other nationalities that took place in India? i.e. in this case where the father was allegedly a Portuguese sea captain and the mother half Indian (father's side) and half Dutch (mother's side), would this nevertheless end up in the British records now in London? In other words, no-one here appears to have British nationality.

Many thanks,

Alan
