It is looking that my 'great grandad' died before my grandad was conceived...... we have found a lodger book with the surname Gillespie on and dont know how to go about finding any information on Gillepies in Monmouth between 1911-1950.
Thanks Bexliz

Hi

Do you have a copy of your grandfathers birth cert showing his parents full names and mothers maiden name?

You can use that info to search the 1911 census for them.  The free 1911 index shows only 2 male adult Gillespie's in Monmouth  - Clifford aged 30 and William aged 25

Thanks, my grandfathers mother was Matilda Shaw b 1871 (i do not know her maiden name) but there is no father named on his birth certificate. She was married to a Tom Shaw but on the 1911 census it says that she is a widow.

Husband Tom Shaw died in March qtr 1907 aged 46

Youngest son Frank Shaw was born December qtr 1906

Was Frank your grandfather or did Matilda have another child after 1911

My grandad (William Henry Samson 'Shaw') was born in 1912......so i guess Shaw is not our actual family name then! Thank you so much for your help. Im going to have to delve deeper into this and find out if the Gillespie man who lodged with Matilda was my grandads father!

Just asked some friends in Monmouth if they remember a Gillespie family, everyone knows a Shaw or two.
