Deegan Family of Co. Laois
« on: Thursday 09 May 13 11:17 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace any information on the above family.
I know that Michael Deegan was born in October 1877 in Corbally. His father was Michael Deegan , a farmer, and mother Jane, nee Dunne.
I am really trying to trace any information on the parents Michael and Jane and hopefully go back from there.

Have you seen these baptisms/birth record on Familysearch.org for children of Michael Digan Jane Dunne -Link http://tinyurl.com/d9v5xpc

The earliest record is for 1865 so possibly their  marriage is pre civil registration and you would have to search the parish records - Clonaslee R.C. parish records start 1849 - did a quick search of the pay site rootsireland.ie but did not find amarriage record.

Hi annclare,
Thank you for the info but have already searched on family search and cannot define which would be our Deegans. The family were RC but not sure where Clonaslee is so not sure if relevant to them.
We still think our best bet is to go to Ireland and locate records from there.  In a WDYTYA with Graham Norton he seemed to still find bmd records in churches. Does this still apply or are all records now in the archives?

To trace Irish ancestry you need to have a location (townland) and it's always best to search for information before you travel to Ireland. There are lots of free Irish recousces online so that you can find out what church records are available (and where), etc.

Starting with the basics-

Michael and Jane Deegan in Corbally in 1901-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Queen_s_Co_/Meelick/Corbally/1646939
Both still living there in 1911- married 50 years (before 1861 so unlikely to be marriage registration) and 9 children (8 living)-

http://www.thecore.com/seanruad has 4 townland listings for Corbally in Queen's Co. (some may be the same townland which is divided between 2 parishes). The most likely one is in Rosenallis civil parish, Mountmellick Poor Law Union (PLU)/Registration District (based on the location of other townland within Meelick D.E.D. in census).

....
I know that Michael Deegan was born in October 1877 in Corbally. His father was Michael Deegan , a farmer, and mother Jane, nee Dunne.
...

what are the other district details on the cert ?

As well as the place of birth, and father's residence, there should be mention of a Superintendent Registrar's district, and also a Registrar's or Dispensary district. These details for these two would help narrow down which townland of Corbally your Deegan family lived.

The Superintendent Registrar's district would probably be  Athy, Mountmellick or Abbeyleix.
It looks like your Michael was registered in Mountmellick district, in which case the Registrar's district would probably be Clonygowan, Emo, Cooltrain, Maryborough (Port Laoise), Mountrath or Mountmellick. The remaining Registrar's district in Mountmellick Superintendent Registrar's district is Clonaslee - which would fit with those extracted civil birth records mentioned by annclare. These often give a district, or sub-district as place of birth so could be siblings of your Michael. (note - the extracted births do not contain all records)

  John Digan / 5 Mar 1865   / 601 , Clonaslee, Queens Co.
  Jane Digan / 11 May 1868 / 610, Clonaslee, Queens Co.
  James Digan / 10 May 1872 / Clonaslee, Queens

A research cert for one of the children mentioned would show additional details to confirm if these are in fact siblings - by checking the townland name, father's occupation etc, but given the fact that parents names match (allowing for a variation) the birth cert you have, and the area looks like it matches, I would say very likely siblings to your Michael
Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)
