Garryowen Rugby Club
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 10:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone help please.

I have just found out that my Husbands Grandmother was an O'Connor from County Limerick.
She was the sister of the O'Connor brothers that played Rugby for Garyowen Rubgy Club.

Can anyone point in the right direction as to where I can get any information about the Rugby playing O'Connor brothers?

Many thanks

Cheryl

"Another great family linked to Garryowen were the O'Connors who won 49 senior cup medals beginning in the 1890's. Born in Athlunkard Street, Limerick, the seven brothers - Mick, Charlie, Jack, Thade, Joe, Bryan and Jim - set an impressive record with 47 medals between them. Jack with 11 had the most. His son, Mick, won 2 making the total: 49."

If you google garryowen rugby club & o'connor you'll get lots of results.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Cheryl,

Mick was my grandfather.  He had 3 girls and the youngest child (the golden boy) Sean is my Dad.

If you need any other info - please just ask and I'll try my best to get it for you.

Hi Jean

Only just got back onto Rootschat today and noticed your post regarding the O'Connors from Limerick.
My Husbands Grandmother was Teresa O'Connor born c 1870 and I am sure its her brothers that played for GarryOwn Rugby Club. He father was Thomas O'Connor and her mother was Honora Culligan.

If you could make contact again I would be really grateful

Hi Cheryl,

I'll have to ask my Dad - I know we did do a family tree a few years before my Nana passed away - so we definitely have the information somewhere.  But I'll ask him what he knows.

I always thought that the brothers' sister was a nun - I was way off there !
If its possible to send me a message directly and we can chat outside the chatroom if you like.

Thanks,
Jean

Hi Cherly & Jean,

I've just come across your chat.

My grandfather was Thade O'Connor - though I never met him - my mother was Joan O'Connor. I have a fair bit of information about "my branch" of the family but my brother and sisters know more than I do. If you want to pursue this and exchange more information let me know and I'll do some homework.

Yodels,
