Castlecreen and Gowran parish
« on: Tuesday 08 July 14 07:23 BST (UK) »
We have been able to find a RC church marriage record for John Shaughnessy and Mary Byrne, in the parish of Gowran in 1843. The address for John is given as Castlecreen. We can't find that name given to an existing locality. Can anyone tell us if it is now called something else?
In addition, we can only find one baptism for John and Mary, a daughter Bridget in 1855, same parish and address. Our records came from Rootsireland, but there are no other baptisms for the intervening years even though we know there was at least one sibling born about 1850. We have tried searching all counties but without luck. Does anyone know if the parish records are complete? We emailed the parish but don't expect a reply as the probably receive too many genealogy questions.
We also lucked out with census records so not sure where we go from here with our research.

Hello and welcome to RootsChat

On this site have a look at Blanchvillespark which is  a division of a townland is referred to as Castlecreen (Caislean crion)   http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlkik/castles.htm

Castlecreen is shown on Google Maps to the east of Kilkenny and north of Gowran

Sorry - I don't know anything re the parish records

Kay

1821 census returns
Clara RC parish which borders Gowran RC parish at Castlecreen
Kilmogar
Byrne Michael, 65, farmer,13 acres
John , son , 39
Mary dr-in -law , 40
Catherine , grand dr , 18
Margaret grand dr ,15
James , grandson, 12
Pat , grandson , 11
Ally grand dr , 8
Mary grand dr 5 years old
Judith grand dr , 2

My relatives live in Castlecreen today and were living  there in 1843  , just thought that the 5 year old Mary Byrne above in 1821 might be your Mary Byrne from 1843

Thank you very much. It could very well be. We have found Mary's death record (we think) in 1867, the informant is an Anne Byrne, address Castlellis. Not much other detail except 'tailor's wife' (correct) under occupation. There is a Michael Byrne as a sponsor at their child's baptism in 1855 and another Mary Byrne was a witness at their wedding. We will soon be able to view some parish records from Gowran so hopefully it will tell us more. (if it is legible)
cheers
