Coolbanagher CoI 1824 baptism - Townsend
« on: Sunday 14 April 13 07:58 BST (UK) »
Looking for the baptism of John Townsend, son of William Townsend, who says on his British army enlistment that he was born "in the Parish of Coolbanagher near the town of Mountmellick"  in 1824.

Does SKS have access to these records? I would love to know John's mother's name if possible and confirm his date of birth and/or siblings.

Is the only possible church St John's or would the parish then have included others?

Thanks for any help.
Kate

Baptism and marriage records for the Church of Ireland parish of Coolbanagher go back to 1802, and records are held by the Representative Church Body Library in Co. Dublin. They dont seem to be available online on any of the major websites at the moment.

Note a CofI baptism would usually only show mother's first name.

Thanks Shane; I see the Church of Ireland is slowly digitising its records so hopefully they'll get to Coolbanagher soon.

p.s. there was talk of the Coolbanagher being transcribed a while ago and made available through the parish, possibly for a fee, but not sure if it went ahead. A quick search didn't show a website..

Ah, that's helpful - I'll contact the parish. I'm in Australia.

See from an earlier post that you mentioned John's Marriage in Co. Armagh in 1858 - do you have a cert for this ?
It should show William's occupation which might help with some other sources - e.g. Griffith's (although abt 30 years after John's birth), Tithe records etc. Certain locations and occupation would not be included - e.g. a soldier would probably not be included in Griffith's, and mainly property related to agriculture is included on the Tithes.

I see that John died in Mountmellick registration district, so might be worth checking out a cert for that to see the location helps. It may give you a townland name... might be where his Townsend he came from ?

Hi Shane,
I have John's wedding cert which says William was a labourer. One other reference I have to William says he was a gardener. John was in the army from 1842-1863 so doesn't appear on much except Army records. Searching on William, assuming birth 1770-1800, doesn't show anyone relevant around Coolbanagher or even Laois - although the tithe records show a William Townsend in Kilkenny, 1829 and 1833,  and in Carlow, 1834, but I don't have any way of knowing if he's the right William Townsend.
Will get death cert.
Cheers

Thanks for your help, Jack. I've been through Horace T's family and know he's not connected but will investigate Cornelius.
Cheers,
Kate
