Hi Diddy,

Thanks for the info.  If JR died in Sept 1814 it cant have been much after his acquittal (where did you find record of that?), and he can't have been that old (if he married in 1811).  My understanding is that the new mill was built by/for Isaac Clover who had acquired the mill site in 1814.  May be that is not accurate and that the new mill was built by/for JR?

All very interesting....

Windy

just used different search on newspapers online & found:

Suffolk Assizes —No true bill was found against Rainham of Buxhall, charged with having maliciously set fire to his mill, with intent to defraud the Norwich Union Fire Office.
Cambridge Chronicle and Journal - Friday 12 August 1814

see also spelling of name. had looked at several on burial index but...

have reread the newspaper article about sale which first appears 31 aug 1814 - think I misread. the sale says dwelling.....as occupied by mr john Raynham. next sale:  furniture etc....... late of mr John Raynham. deed of assignment left for signitures at Mr Raynhams, Rattlesden.  so i don't think he died 1814.  late of not the late mr R...

sorry for misdirecting you!

wikipaedia article on the mill has a reference to a newspaper article ( not available online) about the fire:

Colchester Gazette 16/7/1814 p 194-195

just realised - John married Sarah Cooper from Buxhall - wonder whether she was a relation to the miller Coopers?

I think you're right.  And Ebenezer Cooper (father-in-law?) was going bust in 1811 & 1816.  Maybe that is why NU thought arson was behind it?
