27 Midton Road, Ayr Question
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 16:53 BST (UK) »
Hi

Below is the 1901 census for the property of 27 Midton Road, Ayr, showing three families living there.

Please could someone clarify would this be several self contained rooms that these families would likely rent from a landlord/lady.

Does anyone know what this part of Ayr was like at that sort of time?

Not sure why someone who could afford to have a servant would be living in a shared home, in the case of Jessie Macindo?

Thanks

As this is only a transcription it would be beneficial to have a look at the original document just to confirm things.

For me this transcription throws up a few questions about it, for example under Relationship you have Jessie McIndo (female) as Head and yet you have Annie Miller as Wife - an acceptable relationship nowadays but not I think in 1901 (certainly not one that they would reveal to officialdom in a census)

It is possible that it may have been a tenement building.

Looking at google street view, the present number 27 is a lovely, old property, but not a tenement and unlikely to have been at any time.

Do be aware that whilst it may be one and the same property, number 27 in 1901 could have been elsewhere on the street (if the street was ever renumbered since).

This old post puts a McIndoe family at Midton Street in a slightly earlier timescale too:

I agree with Falkryn that it really would be best to view the original census entry via scotlandspeople, as the transcript may contain mistakes, such as unlinked families being mistakenly transcribed together.

This is the Post Office Directory for 1890-1 www.archive.org/stream/postofficegenera189091uns#page/148/mode/2up

A real mix of properties it seems. Midton Road listings spread over both pages. Can't easily see 27 Midton Road on this.

Main listing for other years here www.nls.uk/family-history/directories/post-office/index.cfm?place=Ayrshire

Wattfield Cottage, where there was previously a McIndoe family, is listed in the directory.

It would seem many of the houses used names rather than numbers.

Jessie's husband seems to have been a schoolteacher, John. She is widowed by 1891 and listed under occupation as 'living partly on private means'. At both 1881 and 1891 (at different addresses each time), their household had a 'servant'.
