Houghton le Spring Candle Factory
« on: Thursday 23 October 14 01:22 BST (UK) »
Some time between 1861 & 1871 George Lishman opened a candle-making business in Houghton le Spring - probably on Newbottle Street or very close by - which I believe continued trading successfully through later generations until around 1945.

Despite searches I've only ever found it referred to as 'the candle factory' - does anyone with local knowledge know what the business was actually called?

In the 1871 Census, George Lishman, was living in Club Row, a Tallow Chandler, employing one man. In the 1881 Census, he was in Union Street (no number), a Tallow Chandler, employing one man and one boy. In 1891 he was a 1 Union Street. In 1901 George Lishman was living at at 111 Newbottle Street, and his son William Lishman was at 5 Union Street, a Tallow Chandler, working at home, so his place of business was 5 Union Street.

Here is an article that actually mentions the "Candle Factory" .
Found under the big banner headline "Happy Birthday".

Thank you for the replies.  I'd seen the "Happy Birthday" article plus another where someone mentioned remembering 'the candle factory' from their childhood, but no actual name.  I do know that George's son & then grandson continued to run it and I believe they exported to other countries, which is why I thought there might have been a business name. Oh well.

Thanks for the Whellans directory entry Stan, I hadn't been able to find one, only the census records, so that's very good to have.
