Mother of Charles Hodgkins
« on: Sunday 22 June 14 10:59 BST (UK) »
Charles Hodgkins was born in 1812 and his parents were William and 'Lariot' Hodgkins. He was baptised in Bromsgrove.
I've never heard of the name Lariot before and I'm thinking that it may have been transcribed incorrectly. Any suggestions as to what her name may be?

Hariot  :-\

Have you seen the actual register or is it just a transcript that you are working from.

Just the transcript unfortunately. A few of his brothers' baptisms have her transcribed as Lawriott.

Could be a mistranscription of Hariot (Harriet). You would need to see the actual record. Also worth looking for other Hodgkins children baptized about the same time, a marriage record for William or the 1841 census record for William if he is still alive then.

Our posts crossed. It the other children have mother Lawriott then you can presumably rule out my Hariot suggestion.

Doing a phonetic search on Lawriott throws up Lorett and Laret. However, it also threw up a Lawrett Albut who died in Bromsgrove in 1778. It may be worth looking into whether this person is an ancestor of your Lawriott.

Is Lawriott a name or has it been transcribed incorrectly? I can't think of anything that sounds like Lawriott.

It could be her given name or it could be that it was misheard or mistranscribed. I have suggested some potential names in my posts above, but there could be others.

Checked the image when I was in the Hive today and it was definitely Lariot. It was well written and there were other examples of  L's and H's to compare it with

Also came across another baptism for an Eleanor Kettle with parents Thomas and Larriet Kettle in a near baptism in the same parish
