I have picked the Sussex site as a number of the Trevanion family lived in Bexhill. Here is my stumbling block-- Charles Cecil Trevanion died 1st Oct 1950 (The Times) His 1st wife was Sybil Mary Parke-Seaton by whom he had a son Hugh Charles Seaton Trevanion who married Mary Hope Stacy & lived Blackboys Sx.
I cannot find a death for the 1st wife yet in a Times Obituary there is recorded the death of Florence wife of Charles Cecil Trevanion & mother of Joanna Trevanion. The missing details are proving difficult & any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Vesta
Sybil died before Dec 1936 ...
The Times, Wednesday, Dec 09, 1936; pg. 17; Issue 47553; col B
Fortcoming Marriages
...
MR H C S TREVANION and MISS STACEY
The engagement is announced between Hugh Charles Seaton, only
son of Mr. C.C. Trevanion, of 12, Vicarage Gardens, Kensington,
and the late Mrs. (Sybil) Trevanion, and Mary Hope, elder daughter
of Mrs. Stacey of Rottingdean, Sussex, and the late Major G A
Stacey D S O
...
The use of parantheses "(Sybil)" suggests that Charles had already remarried (to Florence) otherwise the item would have caused confusion about the identity of "the late Mrs Trevanion".
Hugh was born 20 May 1912 (from his GRO Deaths Index entry).
His step-mother Florence was born 12 November 1891 (from her GRO Deaths entry). In view of her age, we can assume that Charles married her sometime after 1921.
So ... Sybil's death should have been registered between 1921 and 1936.
If we knew when Joanna was born, this would help narrow the search (for the second marriage) and therefore the year of Sybil's death.
-
Hi Vesta
I have noted that Florence's obituary (died 18 Jan 1980) mentions "dear mother of Joanna".
Have you searched the birth indexes for Joanna? What about the overseas birth indexes?
If there are no entries in either of those, I wonder if it's possible that Joanna was the daughter of a previous relationship and not Mr TREVANION?
Have you searched the overseas death indexes for "Sybil"?
Have you looked for will for both Charles Cecil and Florence?

Thank you Dave for this valuable help. Did her(Florence) death record give her maiden name by any chance.
Can I ask another question on "How to do something"
I need to look up Lady Francis Bowes-Lyon who married Hugh Charles Trevanion(b Apr 1929) I expect I could find this on Peerage.com. I can get the site, click search & get the alphabet where I tried clicking T but I never manage to get a person-- any idea what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks again

I am still in difficulties with these Trevanions. Hugh Charles Trevanion married Lady Frances Bowes-Lyon on 2 Feb 1858 still not found B.or D.
I can so far only find one son Hugh Arundell Trevanion b. 1859--he married Florence Eva Cooper in 1882 & she died 1916-- I have photographed her tombstone. Hugh & Florence had 4 children as far as I can find Charles Cecil, Florence Nellie died age 6 months, Hugh Eric & Arundell Claude.
I have now found another Florence Eva Trevanion, marrige 1900 Kensington 3rd Q. Vol 1a p.371. Is she another child or could it be the 2nd wife of Charles Cecil. Help! I'm in a real quandary.
Just to tell other oldies like myself that on the Peerage site if you do not have a mouse because you use a laptop you cannot scroll down-it took us most of the day to realize & once I borrowed a mouse it all worked perfectly.
Thanks Vesta

Hi Vesta
With regards to the 1900 marriage in Kensington registration district, as far as I can see it looks like Florence Eva COOPER also known as Florence Eva TREVANION married Hugh Arundell TREVANION so could it be that it is the same couple who married in the 1880s ie. they married twice - she being noted in the indexes as both COOPER and TREVANION ???
Hugh TREVANION was born c1858/1859 Cornwall according to the 1901 census RG13/21 folio 58 page 3
Have you found the family in the 1891 census? Just wondering if that would give a more precise birthplace for him ???
Who is the Hugh C TREVANION died 1901 St George Hanover Square registration district age 71? Could he be the one married to Frances Bowes-Lyon and possibly the one in the 1901 census at St George Hanover Square age 71 b.London RG13/84 folio 35 page 11 ???
Extract from the will of Hugh Charles TREVANION died 20 May is mentioned in "The Times" 10 Jul 1901.

Hi Vesta
This may help a bit. This is the 1881 census entry:
2 Chester St, St George Hanover Square
RG11/0098/103 p 27
Hugh C. Trevanion Head M 51 b Brompton , London
Frances Trevanion wife M 48 b Edinburgh Earls Daughter
Jas. Speakman 28 b Ashton, Cheshire Butler (Dom Serv)
Sarah Bucksey 35 U b Soberton, Hampshire Dom Serv Ladies Maid
Lily Long 13 b Brompton, London Visitor
Arundel Trevanion son U 21 b Tywardreath, Cornwall Law Student (this looks like Hugh b 1859 or so)
Helen McQuibbon 22 b Knockando, Scotland Cook
Albert Sheepwash 18 b Borough City Footman
Hugh Arundell Trevanion baptised 28 Jul 1859 Tywardreath, Cornwall
All sources suggest that Hugh Charles married Frances Bowes-Lyon 2 Feb 1858 in Hertford. He died 20 May 1901 - unverified!

Snippets...
Hugh Arundell Trevanion was called to the bar, November 1881.
[The Times, 18 November 1881 p10]
He appears to have been charged with bankruptcy in 1886.
[The Times, 19 May 1886 p13]
...and then met with his creditors.
[The Times 5 June 1886 p15]
And, yes, he and Florence Eva were previously married. Details of the divorce proceedings were published in The Times, 27 October (page 3) and 12 December 1887 (page 3).
Clearly their second marriage didn't work out either. In 1908 she petitioned the court to send Trevanion to prison "for breach of an undertaking given to the Court on January 27, 1908, whereby he was not directly or indirectly to molest or threaten his wife".
[The Times 26 May 1908 page 3]
Full details of their second divorce appeared in The Times on 4 July 1908 (page 5). The article mentions that their first marriage took place on 10 June 1882 at the Chelsea Registry Office, and their second on 20 July 1900 at the Kensington Registry Office. The first marriage was dissolved by decree nisi on 10 December 1887, absolute on 26 June 1898. (Trevanion's second wife had died, leaving them free to remarry in 1900). Curiously Hugh Trevanion is referred to as Captain Trevanion in this article.

Also...
Florence Eva Trevanion died on 3rd March 1916. A legal notice concerned her Will and the distribution of her estate appeared in The Times on 23rd June 1916, page 2
-
A very big Thank you to you all-- I never imagined the same couple getting married twice, no wonder nothing made sense. Was there a name or date for the in between marriage i.e beween Hugh Arundell & the 2nd time around Florence Eva?
You are all really kind
Vesta
-
Hi Vesta
Hugh Trevanion's second marriage (between divorces) took place in 1888.
[December quarter 1888, London City, vol 1c page 88]
His bride was either Ellen Elizabeth COOLEY or Charlotte Amy KEY.
It was probably Charlotte Amy KEY because the death of a Charlotte Amy TREVANION was registered in Brentford in the June quarter of 1900 [volume 3a page 49].
and of course Hugh and Florence remarried on 20 July 1900.
-
Very many Thanks Dave, Hugh was certainly a devil for punishment, or perhaps it was Florence. No wonder one of their children committed suicide!!
Vesta
-
Hi Vesta
I'm sorry to say that Hugh seems to be at fault. If you read the articles in The Times you will see that Florence's grounds for divorce were (on both occasions) based on accusations of drunkenness, womanising, adultery and brutality on his part. The only reason Florence married him again was (quote) "for the sake of her children".
Hugh was a qualified barrister, but was later referred to as "Captain Trevanion". Perhaps his bankruptcy resulted in him being debarred and he then followed a career in the Army or Navy?
Dave

Thanks Dave I can't look at The Times until this evening-just expecting visitors. You have really been most helpful. Vesta

My grandmother is Mary Hope Trevanion nee Stacey (b.1910 and still with us) and my grandfather was Hugh Trevanion, my great half aunt is Joanna (also my godmother), my father is David Trevanion (only son of Hugh and Mary b. 1946) if there are any questions I can answer, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for making contact-- this is very exciting. Your GGGGrandma Charlotte Trelawny is a younger sister of my G. Grandfather Edward John Trelawny-- rather famous for burying the Poet Shelley. She married John Charles Bettesworth Trevanion.
If you are agreeable we could correspond by e-mail. I could then print out & scan what I know & attach it & perhaps I may be able to help you. I am in my 70's & do not profess to be very clever on the computer.
My father & Grandparents apparently knew Hugh Arundel Trevanion who died in Bexhill. I was born in Bexhill.
In great anticipation

I have read your reply but they cut out your e-mail for security.. We are not allowed to put info on this site about living people, & as we are both alive & want to find info on living people I'm not sure how we proceed. ( someone may tell us)
I have printed a family tree for you ready to post-- we go on hols shortly.

Hi, I have only just joined. My grandmother was a Trevanion. There are so few Trevanions around I would think they all must be somehow related. She was Florence Helena Trevanion born Bombala, NSW Australia. Her g. grandfather was Charles Henry Trevanion born probably around 1800s. He was an officer in the British Army. She said the family came from Cornwall. But I cannot find anything about Charles Henry. Can anybody help?
Thanks

Hi Kappalyn and welcome to rootschat
Army records are very good so you should be able to find out about Charles from those. It would help if you can pin him down a bit more though. What children did he have and when and where were they born? Who did he marry? When? Deaths?
Vesta - I hope you have made contact with Trevanion by now. If you click on the name or green scroll by the name it gives you the option to send them a personal message. You can then exchange addresses etc but nobody else can see them. New members have to have three posts before they can do this.

Hello Kappalyn
The family seat for the Trevanions was Caerhayes Castle Cornwell. I can only go back to 1804 when John Charles Bettesworth Trevanion was born, he married into theTrelawny Family that I am trying to research.
But, & this might be significant that Charles & Florence seem to be reoccuring family names. I hope Christina will see your post as she is a Trevanion & has researched a lot about her family & is very knowledgeable.
Good Luck

Just another thought-- Sophia Trevanion b.1729 married Adm: The Hon. John Byron grandfather of the Poet Lord Byron. The Hon John's parents were John Byron & Barbara Berkeley.

Thank you Andrea and Vesta,
The information that I know about Charles Henry Trevanion is that he was a British army officer. His wife was Lydia Francis, his son also Charles Henry was born at sea in 1835 probably when they were travelling to the New World ie Australia or New Zealand, but I can find no record of him in NSW although his son was married here in 1863. I will try looking up UK archives for army records.
Thanks again to you both

Not sure if this is of interest, however my family has links to Alice Charlotte Trevanion. Here is a cutting from a chapter of the Grant-Daltons history;
"The eldest son Dalton Foster Grant-Dalton inherited Shanks. On the 3 May 1848 he married Alice Charlotte Trevanion, twin daughter of Charles Bettesworth Trevanion of Caerhays Castle, Cornwall. The Trevanions were one of the most ancient and greatest of the Cornish families. The church at St.Michael, Caerhays, contains many family monuments and relics of the family, notably a sword with which one of the Trevanions was allegedly dubbed Knight Bannerette on Bosworth Field by Henry VII.
Dalton and Alice’s eldest son Reginald was the Black Sheep of the family, and had been disinherited for having married an American actress! So when Dalton died in 1890, the estate passed on to the next in line, who was Alan Grant-Dalton. It was the final irony, that running expenses on the huge estate were so high that he was unable to meet them, and so decided to make his life else- where. "
-
Your post re the Trevanions is interesting. I thought that Charlotte & John Charles Bettesworth Trevanion only had 2 children. Hugh Charles Trevanion & Alice Charlotte who you say was a twin.
Do you have more info on this?
Vesta
-
Perhaps Hugh and Alice were twins? I only have on me what I copied and pasted above. I'll check through the entire chapter but all the original research on Alice's family from there on covers the grant-Daltons down to me. I know my late grandmothers father in South Africa was called "Tre" by his friends as his second name was Trevanion Grant-Dalton.
-
I don't believe that Hugh & Alice were twins. Hugh was born on 2 April 1828 in Paris, Baptised 4 April 1828 in Paris, & died on 20 May 1901 Lownes Sq London.
Alice was born 2 Oct 1830 in Paris & died 27 May 1903 in Winchester.
Charlotte Trelawny was the youngest sister of my G Grandfather.

Hello again
I thought I had better write again & tell you of my findings today. Records are added all the time & my research is a few years old.
Today I found a Baptism record on F my P for Hugh Charles Trevanion with birth 1829 & his baptism taking place on 27th April 1829 at St Michaels Church Caehays Cornwall-- this is contrary to my G.G Grandma's records.
Charlotte & her 2 older sisters were taken regularly to Paris to find husbands & the 2 older ones did indeed marry in Paris so I did not question the birth of Charlotte's children there. Charlotte was almost 30 years old when she married John Charles Bettesworth Trevanion a distant cousin of hers.
Charlotte's mother had turned away other suitors as they were not rich enough!!
Who was your Grandma that you mention as I just might have you on my Tree.
Vesta

Vesta are you asking who my grandmother was? If So, Shiela Williams(nee Grand-Dalton).

Hi,
This family appears in Burke's Landed Gentry, 1863 edition, p.1538 under TREVANION LATE OF CAERHAYES.
A very interesting family.
