BENALLACK Family - St Just and Ladock Cornwall
« on: Monday 04 January 10 01:37 GMT (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall with regards to the Benallack family of cornwall. I am a direct decendent of Stephen Benallack born Ladock abt 1675 and Elizabeth? I am 99% sure that Stephen was the second son of Stephen Benallack and Kathrin Scawen married 1658 at St Just Penwith, both were born St Just Penwith. I know they also had a son John Benallack who married Margery Edie at St Just Penwith but there doesn't seem to be any information on Stephen. Can any one point me in the direction of a birth certificate or other information that might help me put together the pieces. I have tried the opc for Cornwall but they have no information. Any help would be appreciated.

hi liza
welcome to rootschat
you would not be able to get a birth cert for stephen
civil registration did not start until 1837
you would need to look at the parish registers of st.just if that was where stephen was born.

Hi Lisa,

A Big Welcome To RootsChat and the Cornwall Board.  ;D

Everything you are saying seems a little mixed up I am afraid.

I see

Stephen BENALLACK was baptised 9 July 1683 Ladock. Father Stephen.
John BENALLACK bap 13 Nov 1886 Ladock father Stephen

Now getting back to the marriage you mention

Stephen BENALLACK = Katherin SCRAWEN was on the 15 Jan 1645 in Probus  :o so not the parents of these two. (But there are possible earlier John and Stephen to have been sons of these two.)

There are quite a few Benallack marriages in Ladock but the next Stephen is a Stephen BENALLACK = Margery EDDY 24 Feb 1733 Ladock

This marriage for John suggests John Ustick was from St Just - not John.

John son of Stephen BENALLACK = Margery dau of John USTICK of St Just in Penwith 30 Apr 1687 Ladock

also listed as

John BENALLACK gentleman of Ladock = Margery dau of John USTICK Gentleman 30 Apr 1687 St Just in Penwith

so I am not really sure where the marriage took place but it certainly appears John was of Ladock John Ustick of St Just. No other marriages of interest in St Just.

Cheers Kris  :)

There was a Stephen BENALLACK buried in Ladock 25 Apr 1716. Too late to be the one from the Wills reference.
There was a John BENALLACK buried in Ladock 22 Mar 1704
a John BENALLACK buried in Ladock 3 Jan 1729

Besides these looking at some other burials pre 1720 which may prove interesting I see....possible baptsims to explain some but no guarantees as ages are not listed.

a Mary BENALLACK in Ladock 11 Jan 1698 (dau of Stephen and Elizabeth was bap 15 Mar 1797)
a Nicholas BENALLACK buried in Ladock 18 Dec 1702 (son of John and Margery was bap 3 Dec 1702)
a Mathew BENALLACK buried in Ladock 20 Sep 1707
a Richard BENALLACK buried in Ladock 10 Jun 1714 (son of John and Margery was bap 24 Jan 1704)
a Jacob BENALLACK buried in Ladock 17 Jan 1720
a Mary BENALLACK buried in Ladock 6 Feb 1720

I am sorry I see no connection to St Just looking at early Benallack entries. Ladock, seems quite active and a few other parishes have early entries St Agnes certainly also a but of activity. Mid 1600's William was having children in Mevagissey. St Just is a far way away from these parishes.

There was baptised to Stephen and Elizabeth in Ladock (Sorry I cannot find that marriage)

Alice 8 Dec 1691
Catherine 30 Dec 1694
Mary 15 Mar 1697
Alice 26 Nov 1699

There was baptised to John and Margery in Ladock

Dorcas 16 Mar 1688 (Only lists father but seems like the first one)
Henry 6 Nov 1690
Stephen 1 Aug 1692
John 10 Jul 1694
Katherine 23 Mar 1698
Peter 3 May 1700
Nicholas 3 Dec 1702
Richard 24 Jan 1704

Cheers Kris  :)

Hi thanks so much for your reply.

Sorry I have given you dates that don’t make sense.

The John & Stephen you mentioned below are the sons of my Stephen

Stephen BENALLACK was baptised 9 July 1683 Ladock. Father Stephen.
John BENALLACK bap 13 Nov 1886 Ladock father Stephen

As I understand Stephen their father was born around 1658 or the 1660’s, which would make him around the 25 year old mark when the oldest was born. John below I thought was born around 1660 this to could tie in if they were brothers. I can’t find any Parish records or evidence to support this however. There seems to be a lot of information on John Benallack but nothing on Stephen. Would it be possible for you to check and see if there are any Parish records for Ladock in or about the 1660’s that might list the birth of Stephen and maybe John also?

Seems really unusual that there isn’t a marrage recorded for Stephen and his wife Elizabeth maybe they were married at another parish close by?

I have Stephen’s (Wife Elizabeth) children listed as:

Stephen b 1683
John b 1686
Catherine b  1694
Mary b 1698
Alice b 1691
Alice b 1699 ( My ancestor married John Bassett 1725)
Jacob b  1700?
Elizabeth b 1689

Johns (Wife Margery) children as: (These seem to match what you have told me)

Dorcas b 1688
Henry b 1690
Stephen b 1692
John b 1694
Peter b 1700
Nicholas b 1702
Richard b 1704
Katherine b 1698

Look forward to your reply

I am beginning my Bennallack search but haven't gone as far back (yet). I have John Bennallack married to Jane Searle in 1856. They had two daughters (born in St. Austell) and then Jane died. First daughter is Elizabeth Emma (my great-great-grandmother) and second daughter is Hannah Jane. I have the full descendants of Elizabeth Emma, but cannot figure out what happened to Hannah Jane. Does any of this sound familiar or can you help with some advice?
