Ross Family of Struan, Skye. School and Criminal Records
« on: Saturday 18 January 14 17:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can tell me how I can obtain information such as school records and criminal records for my  ancestors from Struan, Isle of Skye. My Grandfather was Donald Ross born 1881 and Great  Grandfather Hugh Ross born circa 1851.

Thanks

Scott

Hi

I came across your post and I think we probably share a Great Grandfather....Peter Ferguson. You say your Grandfather was Donald Ross, can you tell me if his wife was Isabella Ferguson b1904......  d2007 Duirinish Skye? If so, she was my Grandmother's half sister.

I look forward to hearing from you

Hi Christine,

It looks like the same person but we have a different date and place of death for Isabella, this was 2002 in Gairloch the death cert was witnessed by her son Hugh. She was born in 1904 to Peter Ferguson and Catherine MacInnes. Catherine appears to be Peters second wife. Can I ask what your grandmothers name was and her mothers name? This should confirm things.

Happy to share more information with you if required.

Scott

Hi Scott

Yes indeed it's the same person. I note I must have entered  wrongly the date of Isabella's death and sorry meant she was born Duirinish , knew she had died in Gairloch, but had the other details correct.

Peter had married twice and I believe had two children with Catherine MacInnes, your Grandmother Isabella and a boy Kenneth John Ferguson b1906

Strangely he appears to have named Isabella after his first wife , Isabella Campbell b1858...d1901

They lived in Roag Duirinish Skye and together had four children...

Norman Ferguson b1889...d1961

Catherine Ferguson b1891...d1936

Donald Ferguson b1898...d1978

Maggie Ferguson b1899...d1979 (my Grandmother)

Isabella died when my Grandmother was a baby in 1901 and Peter remarried in 1902

When Peter died he lived at Struanmore Skye and had been the ferryman.

I can't ever remember my grandmother mentioning her half brother and sister.  I do know she never got on with her step- mother and left Skye at 14 to go into service in Glasgow, where my father, who is 85 still lives. If there's anything else I can help with please let me know,

Christine

Hi Christine,

That information matches exactly with what I have manged to gather (but obviously a bit more detailed).  My Father was named after Kenneth but he lost touch with the family when he his brother Donald and sister Mary were fostered out aged 6 and left Skye to live on the mainland. My father had no recollection of the reasons for this but as a result did not have a great deal of knowledge about family affairs. It would be interesting if you had any information about Peter Ferguson's ancestors and also any photos of the family (though I know this would be a long shot).

Would be happy to pass on any family info which would help you.

Hi Scott,

I've just started doing my family tree for my mother and I think we match up! I saw your thread about Dorcas and I've been desperately trying to find information on her! I too, came across the death of her daughter at the age of 4.

Hugh Ross is my Great-Great-Grandfather. I'm trying to find the birth date date of his daughter Mary Ross - my Great Grandmother. She had three daughters one of whom is my gran which is how I have linked into this same thread of family. Mary Ross became Mary Murray and her daughter Louisa is my gran.

Hi Scott,

People were criminals long ago because of desperation as there was no "Social Security" etc. in those days & they were imprisoned for what would be classed as "Petty Theft" in this era.
