Midlothian Marriage Help
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 18:22 GMT (UK) »
I need to find a record for Henry Douglas b. abt 1660 married to Martha Lockhart b. 4 July 1652. I believe this marriage is actually to a Richard Henry Douglas 6th Laird of Friarshaw, Laird of Belches but I need more proof. The marriage was 13 Apr. 1672 for Richard but I have no date for the Henry. If this is the same marriage they had a daughter Elizabeth born abt 1680 in Ministrie, Scotland. Any help would be most appreciated. If possible a copy of any records would be fantastic. Many thanks in advance.

Blessings
Kevin

Kevin, given you are so far back...you know how thin original records are by now.

Where does the reference to Richard as a first name come in?

Plenty of references to Henry and Martha, just not Richard Henry and a Martha.

Some of the children showing for them include:

George 1672 - on SP
James 1674 - on SP
Martha 1675 - on SP
Thomas 1676 - on SP
Sarah 1678 - on SP
Henry 1679 - on SP
Elizabeth 1681 - on SP
Samuel 1682 - on SP
Henry 1684 - on SP
Andrew 1687 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTPF-FCQ
Jean 1688 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM3W-W7C
Richard 1689 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F3B2-VF5
William 1891 - on SP

All of the above children's births/christenings are in Edinburgh, no mention of father as Richard, just Henry/rie or Hary.

Marriage entry from the Old Parish Registers (original image available to view on the pay to view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/).

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTN4-MY4

This matches the date you have, but it is Harie not Richard.

Monica

PS: Harry and Henry have been first name variants for a long time www.whatsinaname.net/php/search.php?action=search2&search_name=harry

Monica, I got the name Richard from Lockharts.com. Am I correct that Martha was the daughter of Samuel Lockhart of of East Ravenstruther in Carstairs?

Hi Kevin

Unfortunately, I do not know the genealogy of this line personally. Just trying to do some searches to help you further.

Have you tried contacting the site to check their sources for this info? www.lockharts.com/contact-us/

Hi Kevin and Monica,

I have had a look at the wonderful site www.lockharts.com. This is remarkable piece of work, by an Isabella S Lockhart. The linking of the Balnagown Estate from the Ross to Lockhart-Ross and then to Mohammed Al-Fayed recently, gives it a human interest story.

I used the search part of the website to look for Martha Lockhart and then Henry Douglas and indeed Richard Henry Douglas, but got no results to put these 2 names together. I did get a duple of results for Martha but could not tie her up with any marriage that you mention in your first post.
