I got the death certificates for Williams  parents.

James MacKay March 13th 1897 ancrum age81.

His mothers maiden name Agnes Cockburn .
His father Alexander MacKay  Occ. Weaver.

Can anyone help me find this couple in the census years. My only clue is James MacKay was born in Eccles Berwickshire in 1816

Catherine MacKay June 1st 1899 Ancrum age 84. maiden name Scott.

Her  mothers maiden name Margaret Bell.
Her father William Scott Occ. Labourer.

Can anyone find this couple in the census years. My only clue is Christine was born at Hobkirk Roxburghshire in 1816.

I think I  got Annies birth. She was illegimate and was called unnamed female Dodds.

I have looked for a marriage for these two couples and found nothing yet.

William and Mary are still on the missing persons  list.

                                                                                      Thank you,
                                                                                                         Norma

How strange, Norma, that this couple are not around in the 81.  Did they ever use another name?  Have you picked up Mary on the census pre marriage and where was Annie born?  I will try and have a look for you over the weekend.

Hi Norma,

I think I have found your McKay lot.  I don't know who was the informant for James' death but often the death certificates are wrong as they are only as good as the informant knows.  In Eccles, there are 15 Mackay baptisms or births in the parish records and 10 of these are to Alexander McKay and Isabella Cockburn.  To my mind this is too much of a coincidence especially as there is a James in 1814.
The family are in Eccles in 1841. Alexander is an Ag Lab born 1796 in Berwickshire and his wife is the same age and also born in Berwickshire.  Children are Daniel 15, Robert 12, Grace 10 and Andrew 8.  This matches the parish records apart from Daniel who doesn't show but there is a William born in 1826 so it may be the same person? By 1851 I can't find Alexander or Isabella and Daniel and Andrew are servants lodging out.

Hi Barbara,

Thank you for the info.I have to agree with you.I have the marriage forAlexander McKay and Isabella Cockburn

12th Jan 1812 at Eccles.

There is a mistake on the Christines death certificate too.Her mothers name should be  Isabella Bell not Margaret.

I have William Scott married to Isabella Bell and from that I got Williams parents

William Scott born 1757 Hawick death 1840 Hawick Wilhelmina  Scott born 1759 death Hawick 1841.

I wonder if these two were cousins?

Getting back to William and Mary.In the beginning all I had was their names on Annies wedding certificate

in 1885.It did not state deceased. On the census years after her marriage Annie always said England as

her place of birth. She was born 1861/1862.

1861 census address Hamlet of Moneylaws Carham Northumberland.

James Dodds Head born 1811 Scotland age 50 agricultural labourer

Agnes Dodds born1814 Wooler Northumberland

Agnes Dodds born1845 age 16 Scotland

Mary Dodds age 19 born 1842 unmarried Scotland [ This is who I believe to be Mary.]

1861 census  Servants Cottages, Hamlet of West Learmouth Carham

James McKay age 46  born 1815 agricultural labourer born Scotland

Catherine McKay age 45 born Scotland

William McKay son age 22 born 1839 Scotland agricultural labourer. [ This  is who I believe to be William]

Margaret McKay daughter married age 20 born 1841 Scotland

James Alexander  McKay age 15 born 1846 Scotland

John McKay     age 12 born 1849 Scotland

Robert McKay age 8 born 1853 Carham Nortumberland

Mina Sott McKay age 5 born 1856 Scotland

Catherine Scott   McKay age 3 born 1858 Ford Northumberland

That puts these two families together in the same place Carham in 1861

I found  Agnes McKay born 5th Nov.1863 Eccles   I got her birth certificate and she is the daughter
of William and Mary Dodds. That is where I got the marriage date from

Mary Scott MacKay born 24th April 1873 Morpeth, Northumberland could also be a daughter but I did not buy her birth certificate to check.

James Dodds Marys father was born at Yetholm and Mary Dodds was born there too about1841.

I have not started to trace this Dodds family yet.

Wilhelmina Scott McKay  who was Williams sister went to Coldwater, Branch County , Michigan, United States. She was 16 years old.Maybe William and Mary went there for awhile.
Mina as she was known married John Cochrane in 1873 at Coldwater

I did wonder if William and Mary had gone abroad and left Annie with the grandparents.  There seems to be  no sign of them in the Borders on either side.

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for your help.I have found Alexander and Isabella in 1851 .Name spelled Makay. They were at Ford Northumberland.1861 and 1871 they were at Carham Northumberland.

I have been in contact with Mina's family  and they don't know who she travelled with.It was about 1871.I can't find her on any ship either.

oh that is good new, does it give a place they were born or does it just say Scotland?  MacKay is not really a border name and I am wondering if they came down from the Highlands.

Hope they moved back to Scotland and died there so you get their parents!

I agree that Mary Scott Mackay sounds like theirs but you haven't found them in 1871 either, have you?  Might be worth tracing her thro the census in 1881?
