I had a lightbulb moment
What if Richard Newman was from the German branch
I heard a german line came to England in the 1500's
So I'm going to look at the Nueman spelling who knows I might find what I'm looking for
Maybe!
Surnames do change maybe Richard anglisized his surname but haven't searched this possibility
Wish me luck.

Hi Avongirl,

if they are from Germany their name would be Neumann. I have Newman from Christian Malford. Any connection?

Regards Peonie

Newman was a very common name in Wiltshire.  My 5 x great grandmother was Richard Newman of Burbage's sister.  As they generally used the same first names and most were illiterate ag labs,it is difficult to verify connections.

Re - your earlier question, Burbage is about 25 miles from Salisbury. It takes about 40 minutes to drive there today.  It is not impossible that the link is there but it is unlikely.  However,it may be a better bet than the german idea!

Hi Peonie and lulubird

Have not searched this theory yet that my husband's Newman could be Nueman
Yes Richard was an ag lab but he must have had a boarding house to place his son's future wife Mary Delicate in 1819 when she was expecting a illegitimate son
But Phineas does sound german
He is the only phineas born to any Newman
Maybe our Richard wasn't baptised?
Could be the reason he is not there you had to pay or Richard was baptised in dorset just on the boarder the boarder changed to Wiltshire and presto he put Wiltshire

Hi
I changed my email address sorry I haven't replied I must update my profile and put my email in
Anyway my hubby's Richard Newman is a mystery no one knows about him not even the Guild of one name studies
They have the other brances but not my husband's line
Richard Newman born around 1770 Wiltshire and died 1846
Richard married a Sarah Laws in 1799 Salisbury
The trees I have looked at have our Richard the burbage one which confuse the other brances
I'm trying to find the true family of Richard Newman
Was he baptised?
Was he from Wiltshire or dorset?
Did the boarders change by 1841 census?
Was he from Burbage
I know the burbage one married Elizabeth Scarlett and had a Mistress Mary Rawlings but could he have married a Sarah Laws
Looks like the burbage Richard loved his women
Tell me about your family
Nearly all my husbands family I can see have the burbage branch as their family but I'm trying to find the right branch and point them in the right direction
I find that family history societies like the guild have no info
I must get the death of phineas Newman and what info he put down for father
Phineas and his family moved on to Australia and it's so hard because all the records are in England
On the IGI only 4 Richard's are christened
Was it compulsory to baptise children then in 1770?
So many questions I have and Who was Richard Newman where did he come from
He had a boarding house
