Hi - I'm trying to trace a Frank Smith who left the shetland islands in about 1800 in search of work.  I know he came from a butchers family.

I'm just starting to realise I can trace smiths (with difficulty! ) so if I learn more I'll post it.

Cheers,

Stewart Smith

Hi i'm looking for information on an Elizabeth Smith born 1829 to parents James Barclay Smith and Margaret Clark.

I have no idea what part of the Shetlands they are from, I am only going from what is written on Elizabeth's death cert.

I know that she was in Australia by 1851 because she married over here in that year.

Thanks, No I have not heard about the DNA Project, Please tell me more.

Regards,

Gordon.

Hi Gordon:

Don't think your enquiry about the Shetland DNA project was answered.  See:

http://www.davidkfaux.org/shetlandislandsY-DNA.html

The first Smith on the list is my Dad, now deceased.

Just noted your question about the SHETLAND DNA project.  Sorry, didn't notice it before.  Here is the site for it:

Laurence Smith b. Sept. 12, 1812 at Longhouill, Sandwick, d. Jan, 1857 while ling fishing.  Memorial stone at Maywick.

My question is - would there have been a newspaper in 1857 that might have news of this family tragedy.  This man is my G.G. Grandfather - his son, also a Laurence emigrated to Canada - hv Cdn. family information.

Thx all and Merry Christmas to all. :)  Lauraine

Hi All

Actually found a newspaper clipping of Laurence Smith's drowning.    It was in an old newspaper of 1857.  Will check out to see where it came from is anyone is interested.  Know it did not come from Shetland tho the newspaper was one of theirs.

Hello all,

I have just tonight found this fascinating forum and I absolutely had to join in - because someone here has been asking about a Thomas Smith. I believe that he may be my maternal great-grandfather. I seem to recall that he was married to an Ophelia (unusual name), and he was the father of my late maternal grandmother, Emmie Smith from Burra on Shetland.

Seeing as I live in the south of England and I have only ever visited Shetland once, it is difficult for me to access any historic data in person.

I am hoping that others may be able to help me through this site.

Please can anyone enlighten me about my Shetland side of the family? It has always fascinated me and I have always felt a connection with the island (including my years of fiddle playing!)

Elizabeth

Not sure but have been looking for a Thomas Smith b in Shetland.  He just sort of disappeared off the map tho I have all the other members of the family accounted for.  Please let me know in what year this man was born so I can see of he is related to my Laurence Smith.  Thank you.

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Well, gosh, I'm not able to give his DOB at the moment, but I imagine it was around 1888 (assuming that he was approx. 25 years old when my grandmother was born). He worked at sea, as far as I am aware.

Interestingly, there was a Laurie Smith in the family (Granny's brother) who sadly died as the tragic result of a mindless arson attack outside his home in Manchester somewhere, back in the 1990's.
