« on: Tuesday 02 September 14 13:49 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

In a burial record from Minster parish records (St Mary), there is a burial entry:

Peter Wotton bur 4/2/1621 a householder of ffoudige.

I have googled Soudige but cannot find a place of this name or anything like it.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Nearest I can come up with is Fordwich. Probably wrong as you're right, ff was used for S back then but occasionally it stood for S at the beginning of a word.

Kent Archeological has this entry recroded showing that the Wooton family did indeed live in Fordwich.
. An altar tomb near the yew tree. Coat of arms – a chevron between 3 compasses with helmet etc. In sure and stedfast hopes of the Resurrection. Here lieth the body of Henry WOTTON, late of Fordwich in Kent, carpenter who departed this life the 15th day of March the year of our Lord 1734 in the 65th year of his age. Who rests in Hope of a joyfull Resurrection to ye life everlasting. In and through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour and Redeemer.

Fordwich has a parish council but it is called Minster-on-Sea.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Hi AJ100 & Hackstaple,

Thanks very much. I don't think I would have arrived at Fordwich! I will look into Woottons there.

Fordwich (near Canterbury) is reputed to be the smallest town in England. Minster on sea is on the Isle of Sheppy, and does sometimes get confused with Minster Thanet. Take care not to confuse the two when researching :)
