I've spotted this name recently in some things I've been transcribing for FreeREG. They updated the database yesterday, and having just done a quick search, it must've been Great Holland I'm thinking of (which might be too far out, and doesn't include a Jonah).

Saying that, it does bring up a baptism for a Jonah Beckwith in Bocking on 28 Aug 1684, son of Samuel - might that be a connection?

Have you looked at the non-conformist registers?

The surname stuck in my mind because I was at school with a girl called Beckwith who I think lived somewhere near Braintree!

Hi there :)

My great grandmother's maiden name was Beckwith :)
And she lived in Essex. Although I think it was West Ham area...
Her name was Florence Rebecca Beckwith born in the 1890's.
Unfortunately I don't know any other people in my family :(

I have a family will signed in 1749 in Braintree and witnessed by a John Beckwith.  A Google search - "John Beckwith" Braintree - will bring up mention of various John Beckwiths, including those on SEAX - Essex Archives, Ancestry trees, etc.

Hi bit late to this, but I'm looking at several branches of Beckwith around the Braintree area - Coggeshall/Kelvedon/Braxted - Halstead - Braintree/Bocking.

Jonah of 1781 is on one of them - his first marriage was in 1806 Braintree to Mary Clarke, second in 1823 to Ann Collis, who was single.

There seem to be at least two Jonah/Jonas around in the 1770s - one in Halstead parents John/Hannah c1777. Also there are others earlier!
Essex/Suffolk and further afield where linked - Partridge, Elliott, Beckwith, Lewsey, Owers, Appelton, Josselyn, Sewell, Lindsell and loads of others!
