William Main/ Janet Hay 1845
« on: Friday 22 August 14 23:20 BST (UK) »
William Main married Janet Hay 1845, New Monkland. They are found in New Monkland in the census records from 1851-81 inclusive. William was a road surface labourer and pithead man. They had three children: Thomas Robert Wylie Lawson Main 1845; Jean 1848; Ann 1850. I have not had any success finding William’s parents. From the census records, he was born in Greengairs. I could not find a death record for him in Scotlands People, nor could I find one for Janet Hay. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information on this couple.
Main, Mitchell; Stirlingshire
Drummond; Perth

No birthyears included - 1861 shows both born 1816

1851 shows Janet b New Monkland but 1861 shows birthplace Cumland, Dunbartonshire

1871 - Janet is Jessie b Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire

1881 - again she is Jessie b Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire

William is still alive in 1891 but wife is Lizzie H also b 1816 Cumbernauld, Dumbartonshire

There are burials listed in New Monkland Churchyard which might match with your family here (Greengairs isn't that far away from Glenmavis):

http://memento-mori.co.uk/50.pdf

William Main died 14th January 1893 aged 76? years (born c1817)
Jessie Main (nee Hay) died 1st January 1900 aged 83 years (born c1817)
Annie Main died 11th December 1869 aged 19 years 5 months(born c1850)

There are quite a few William Mains, but I think the closest is the one I've included above (only because his year of birth is the same as Jessie's).

The question mark after his age may mean the inscription on the stone is probably either worn away or difficult to read, but if the William is yours, from his DC you would probably get his parents.

Annie/Ann's date of death would make her year of birth 1850 which again matches Ann on your list. Does she vanish from the 1871 Census?

If the details for Jessie are the correct Jessie/Janet Main nee Hay, then she would be on the 1891 Census, but not on the 1901, so possibly if Carol has quoted from a transcription, the name is wrongly listed as Lizzie?

Does this make sense?  ;D
