« on: Tuesday 26 August 14 13:02 BST (UK) »
I am back working on my laurie/lawrie tree & would like some advice .
I am looking for the parents of ROBERT LAURIE. the only information I have is that he married jean scott in 1792 at carlike.
they are on the 1841 census at carlike, Robert is 60 years & a labourer, jean is aged 20.
any help would be much appreciated.
with thanks

Hi Margmo1

Unless I'm reading your post wrong the ages shown at 1841 census (particularly Jean's )don't match with marriage in 1792.

my mistake jean was aged 60 in 1841
I went onto scotlands people & looked at the census again. i thought the family were mine as there was a Robert - head.   wife jean & also a son William (my line)
BUT now i have viewed the death cert. for Robert laurie - gives his burial on 12.6.1743 at carluke aged 72 - married to jean scott. unfortunately does not give parents names.
thanks for your help

HI Margaret
Have been browsing on Family search. The only marriage for Robert and Jean that came up was the one you have for 1792. the children shown for them are Elizabeth Brown Lawrie, Jean, Janet, Mary and Martha Lawrie.
As your Robert died 1743 this marriage can't be his
Likewise as the Jean who was 60 in 1841 census  would have been born around 1777 and 1781  this  marriage could not have been hers either.
It look as if there's a generation gap here and the family in the '41 census could still fit your family somewhere.

Regards Margaret

The age for adults in the 1841 census is rounded down to the nearest 5, so if Robert Laurie was age 60 in that census, he could have been aged from 60 to 64. Also the census was taken in June. So he would have been born somewhere between 1776 and  1781 -  - providing, of course, he knew exactly how old he was! The death you've found gives a birth date of about 1771, but the age given at death is only what someone at the time said they thought it was.

A death in Scotland in 1843 won't have a death certificate as they didn't come in until 1855. Is the death entry your found a burial entry in a parish register?

On FamilySearch there are a few births of a John Laurie or Lawrie or Lowrie or Lourie in the right time frame, but difficult to know which it might have been, if it was any of them.

Was William is only or eldest son? If he was, there's a good chance Robert's father would have been called William (use of Scoottish naming pattern). Not infallible but can be useful.
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

 hi  jmstrachen
thank you for replying. I think this is my brick wall. the marriage & death certificates gives no information on Robert's parents. his son William ( my line ) was a much later child - birth year 1813.
