Winnipeg newspaper 23 Aug 1940 (or maybe the day before)
« on: Tuesday 09 September 14 22:06 BST (UK) »
Hi Chatters,

I came across this sentence in a diary about the Children's Overseas Reception Board (CORB) from WWII.

Coming back, we were given newspapers with our photos in [them], they are very good.

Can someone please help me obtain the pictures (& article?) that are noted in the diary as being published in the Winnipeg newspaper 23 August 1940? One of the photos will be of my mother-in-law, one of the evacuees.

The date of the diary entry was 23 Aug 1940. The evacuees arrived in Winnipeg by train at 3PM 22 Aug so that means the pictures are most likely to have been in the paper on 23 August 1940 (but may have been published the night before??).

I won't mention my m-i-l's name as she is still alive. Another of the evacuees, Margaret Beal, died a few days ago. The photos should be searchable under her name.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

You're right - pictures of the group appeared in the Winnipeg Tribune on 23 Aug 1940.  There are two pictures on page one and two more on page five.  Unfortunately, however, only the names of a few boys in the group are actually given.

 :-* Thank you LindaGW.

I'll take the print-outs to my m-i-l when I see her on Friday. :) I'm quite sure she's in the bus picture on page 5, fifth over from the left with the white dress holding the purse against her tummy and the satchel on its strap.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. You rock!!!  :-*

Happy to help.
There may be some other pictures in the Winnipeg Free Press of the same date.  It is also available online but you would need a subscription.

Thanks again Linda.  :-* I made a request of the Winnipeg library to determine if the other newspaper of the day also had photos of the evacuee children arriving. The photos arrived electronically this morning. It's great to have both sets, but the ones you provided to me were a much higher quality.  :)
