The Ordnance Survey six-inch (6" to 1 mile) maps are online at the National Library of Scotland site - http://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch-england-and-wales/index.html. (No, I haven't made a mistake here - most of the maps on the site are for Scotland only, but this series covers England and Wales too.)

I find it easiest to browse the country on a zoomable map (the first option given); it was a bit slow for me just now, but if you persevere you first select the area/sheet you want, then there's a choice of dates down the RH side. You'll eventually get to a 6" map showing all the streets, and all but the back alleys seem to be named. There's no street index, but since it's free I'm not complaining.

Try http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html there is a 1942 1/2500 map. Are you looking for a particular street?
