Hi Monica,   ;D

Many thanks for all the details you've managed to find for me -  Wonderful !    ;D

It's a shame Sarah came from Ireland,  I've looked for someone else in Ireland before, and didn't have any luck at all.   :(

Once again many thanks, you've been a great help.

Regards

Hi Foz

A possible clue as to where Sarah Cairns came from in Ireland on IGI, amazingly  :o an actual extract:

JOHN KEARNS  Birth: 06 FEB 1822  Dromore Parish, Down, Ireland
Parents: Father: SAMUEL KEARNS  Mother: ISABELLA

Mother's maiden name Isabella BROWN.

You might want to trace some of the Cairns (Kairns) showing in Old Luce in the 1841 census onwards, the names Samuel and Isabella/Elizabeth crop up (either born Ireland or Wigtownshire). Not many entries, may well be related to Sarah.

Regards.

:o Wait a minute...I wonder if parents (and Sarah) came over after the 1841 Census. Just found this entry in 1851:

Samuel Cairns    73, carter, b. Ireland
Isabella Cairns 54, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
James Cairns    30, Ag labourer, b. Ireland
Isabella Cairns 22, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
Elizabeth Cairns 20, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
Dorothy Cairns    16, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland
Helen Cairns 14, Flowerer Or Muslin Sewer, b. Ireland

Address: Main Street, Glen Luce

Would fit wouldn't it...I'll have a look in the 1861...

Monica

Isabella may have died by 1861 and Samuel is doing funnies with his age:

Samuel Cairns    76, carter, b. Ireland
James Cairns    40, carter, b. Ireland
Elizabeth Cairns 26, seamstress, b. Ireland
Mary Brown 4, granddaughter, b. Glenluce, Wigtonshire

Address: Main St, Old Luce

This looks like the IGI entry for child Mary showing above, daughter to Elizabeth by the look of it:

MARY CAIRNS  Birth: 24 OCT 1856  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Mother: ELIZ. CAIRNS

Regards.

You're in luck  ;) Isabella Brown looks to have died post 1855. A likely death entry showing for her on SP:

1860   CAIRNS   ISABELLA/ BROWN    U*   OLD LUCE OR GLENLUCE   /WIGTOWN   894/00 0056

* Age at death unrecorded on the Index.

And Samuel's death entry at a good age:

1877   CAIRNS   SAMUEL   89   OLD LUCE OR GLENLUCE   /WIGTOWN   894/00 0016

Regards.

I've found out that Sarah Cairns parents were definitely Samuel Cairns and Isabella Brown, although I haven't been able to get any details on them yet.

I've also found that Thomas McCowens parents were John McCowen (master Tailor) and Ann(i)e Lorrimer,  I've searched and searched and can't find a thing.

Can anyone help, please?

Hi Foz

Firstly, regarding Sarah Cairns' parents Samuel and Isabella Brown. A word of caution, even with the names of their parents from their death certs., you are going to have the issue of researching in Ireland where records are much more difficult to source. If you have viewed Samuel and Isabella Brown's death certs. and they contain their parents' names, you might want to try a new post on the Ireland Board here on RootsChat.

In respect of Thomas, did you get the father's name as being John from his DC? I think there may have been some misreporting on his DC of his father's name which I think is likely to be James not John. Remember we have a likely birth entry for Thomas, an actual extract:

THOMAS MCEWEN     Christening:  12 MAY 1822  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
Parents: Father: JAMES MCEWEN    Mother: ANN LATIMORE

I've just looked on IGI, and there is also a marriage banns entry for this couple, also an actual extract:

ANE LATIMORE
Parents: Father: PAUL LATIMORE

Marriages: Spouse: JAMES MCEWEN
Marriage: 28 MAY 1821  Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

Children showing to this couple on IGI:

1. THOMAS MCEWEN Christening: 12 MAY 1822 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
2. HELEN MCEWEN Christening: 14 NOV 1824 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
3. ANN MCEWEN Christening: 02 MAR 1828 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
4. MATILDA MCEWEN  Christening: 20 JUN 1830 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
5. JESSIE MCEWEN Christening: 09 OCT 1831 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
6. ELIZABETH MCEWEN Christening: 27 NOV 1836 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland
7. JANE MCEWEN Christening: 22 APR 1839 Old Luce, Wigtown, Scotland

I'll have a look in the censuses for father James to check out his occupation.

Regards.

Monica  :)
