appeal for Forge Tree Hopehead information
« on: Thursday 21 June 07 19:54 BST (UK) »
O.K. This is a bit of a strange request but here goes.

I am looking to find out any information about, and very much would like a photograph of, a well known tree at Hopehead Farm - Haugh of Urr, Castle Douglas.  The tree was known as the Forge Tree and was sadly felled about a decade ago.  The tree was so big and significant it is mentioned on the O.S. map.

A web site mentions that it was so large the passing cavalry men used to sit in its branches whilst awaiting their horse's shoes to be fixed.  Its history goes back for quite some time.  I would really love to see a photograph of it or would appreciate any information about it.  I've posted this on the Dumfries forum in a hope that someone local to the area can help.

Yours J.A.

Hello Emma.

Unfortunately despite many attempts I have not yet been successful.

It was suggested that I write a short resume for the local Castle Douglas/Dumfries newspaper so that it could be published but have not had the time for the courage to do so.

I will PM you and we can chat.

May I ask why you are interested - any family connections to Hopehead?

No direct connection I’m afraid. I came across a reference in an old pamphlet at the NLS while researching Buittle parish. I was amazed at the measurements and thought we may take a trip by to see just how big the tree was! I started looking on street view and of course discovered it wasn’t there which is awfully sad.

I wonder why it was cut down.
