Ann, have a wonderful trip. Just a tip though - if you can mange it, I think you will need a lot longer than one day in the area. It is beautiful and travelling distances may be longer than you predict (I found this).

Conwy is one of my favourite castles. Sadly last time I was there on a New Year's day, it was closed,  :( one of only a couple of days in the year it is not open. You can spend the best part of a day alone just exploring the castle.

I am unable to help you specifically in the search for your family, but I hope you can find and manage to visit some of the places where they lived, and perhaps were buried. I also hope that the area they lived remains relatively unchanged so you can get a feel for the places as your ancestors would have known them.

As I'm sure you realise, you have two very common Welsh surnames there.  ;)

Enjoy your lovely holiday.

If you are juggling time between Birmingham and north Wales and hope to see places where your ancestors lived, keep in mind that Birmingham is a huge city with much redevelopment over the years.

It is quite likely that addresses where your family lived no longer exist.

Also consider street name changes - I know this occurred a lot in London (unsure about Birmingham though).

In addition, if the changes have been extensive, then you may not even get a sense of what it would have been like when they lived there. This is the case with me - the places where my ancestors lived in Birmingham have been obliterated. You may even find churchyards where your ancestors were buried are now under shopping centres or other buildings ... a bit sad really.  :-\

With a bit of detective work, if you have their addresses on the various censuses, you should be able to find these streets on http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html and you can compare the locations on a modern google map.

I believe that some people do get sick of castles (but not me  ;)). Wales has some of the best too.

What a brilliant trip to look forward to - lucky you!

I've done a bit of delving and found that RHYS Roberts married Mary Jones at St.Gwynan church in Dwygyfylchi (near Penmaenmawr) in Oct-Nov-Dec quarter 1873. If you contact Caernarvonshire archives (email: archives.caernarfon@gwynedd.gov.uk) they may do a quick search for you of the parish registers and tell you his father's name and also if he signed the register which would give you the correct spelling of his first name.

In 1891 Rees stated he was born in Llanelhaiarn and the family were living at Mount Pleasant.

In 1901 at 2 Mountain View, Pistyll, Caernarvonshire as boarders were:
Rees Roberts widower 48 Building/Mason b. Llanelhaiarn and Evan Roberts 19 b. Penmaenmawr
There is a burial at Dwygyfylchi on 25 December 1893 of Mary Roberts of Mount Pleasant.

In 1861 at Glan y Gors, Llanelhaiarn were:
Richard Roberts born 1823 Stone Quarrier b. Llanelhaiarn
Marged Roberts (welsh for Margaret) b.1827 Llanelhaiarn
Rhys Roberts age 9 b. Llanelhaiarn - and several other children

I mention this as two of Rees' children were Richard and Margaret so a possible family to explore.

Dwygyfylchi is a small village very close to Penmaenmawr so you will have no difficulty in finding the church.
