How to access burial registers at Vols 1 - 3 on Find My Past
« on: Friday 29 August 14 12:43 BST (UK) »
I'm told (see Dolfor below) I can access the burial register I want to see at Find My Past  Vols 1 - 3
Can anyone please tell me how to access these volumes? I have access to FindMyPast, Searches don't come up with anything so I, presumably, need to Browse by Volume. How?

I posted a query about the information I'm after previously, now I want to know how to access by volume please?

The Details if necessary
Basically I'm after the burial register entries for Mary & Elizabeth Hughes bur 1886 and 1887 at Ceri/Kerry

Hi

You will have to select a year range not a vol number.

Have you tried selecting Powys records rather than Montgomeryshire records? Quite a few of my ancestors appear in the  Powys records. Not sure why they have been grouped like that  ::)

I'll have a quick look and if I find them, I'll let you know how to access them.

How can there be a gravestone memorial without burial reg record
« Reply #2 on: Friday 29 August 14 14:35 BST (UK) »
Following instructions sent I find it's not necessarily my technique at fault (see below).

I can access Kerry Burial Register, for say 1855, but this register ends in 1860. This sort of matches with the message on the Montgomeryshire Parish Registers at Powys Archives page which says: Burials 1813 - 1860 (for burials 1853 - 1872 see Dolfor). I can also access Dolfor burial register and see burials for 1886 and 1887. In the abode column are some with the an address from Kerry and some from Dolfor.

However the gravestone is in St Michael's churchyard, Kerry as documented by MONTGOMERYSHIRE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY: 167 John [living husband] and Mary[mother 28] - Marble cross on sandstone plinth. Cross reads In loving memory of, Plinth reads Mary the beloved wife of John Hughes Llangedwyn, who died 14th Dec 1886 aged 28 years.

So new question now is how can there be a memorial with no record in the burial register?

Instructions
Choose " Births, marriages and Deaths & Parish Records" in drop down menu and click on " All collections"
Click on "Deaths and burials"
Put "dolfor" in "Where - Britain"
Click on "Search"
When results displayed, click on "Relevance" and choose "Died".
Will list all Dolfor burials earliest to latest.
Hughes - Llangedwyn, Llanfechain, Llanrhaiadr, Llansilin
Roberts - Llandisilio, Montgomeryshire
Davis - Caterham, Surrey
Mitchell - Windygates, Fife
Hayes - Radcliffe
Edwards - Llanyblodwell

They don't seem to appear in Powys burials under Dolfor or Kerry or Montgomery records under Kerry. No record at all  are showing for burials in Kerry 1886 +/- 5.  I left names blank. This usually lists all records for selected years.

I would think that the burial records are not indexed on FindMyPast.

I agree they're not indexed. Though the appearance of burials marked 'Kerry' in Dolfor register shows they are being recorded for the 1886/1887 period.

Could the answer be that the monument in Kerry churchyard is just that? a memorial with no burial? The husband lived near Llangedwyn in Denbighshire, 25 or 30 miles away. But Mary Hughes' family were of the Trow family of Kerry. Might they (could they) erect a monument to their daughter who married only in April, then died in childbirth and is buried elsewhere, perhaps 25 miles away?

I'll have to get the likely looking indexed certificate from Oswestry (8 miles from the husbands home) to see if that throws any light on this. Thanks

I checked Llangedwyn before I replied but could not see anything.

Indexed Shropshire and Denbighshire burial should be there but.......

You could try contacting them:

I'll get in touch. A tree compiled 1n 1970 when other children of John Hughes were around says 'born and buried in Kerry'.
Hughes - Llangedwyn, Llanfechain, Llanrhaiadr, Llansilin
Roberts - Llandisilio, Montgomeryshire
Davis - Caterham, Surrey
Mitchell - Windygates, Fife
Hayes - Radcliffe
Edwards - Llanyblodwell

Update on memorial in Kerry but no burial registry entry there or in Llangedwyn
« Reply #8 on: Saturday 06 September 14 16:34 BST (UK) »
Received the death certificate for Mary Hughes nee Trow with memorial cross in St Michael's churchyard Kerry Montgomeryshire but no entry in either the Kerry or later Dolfor (for Kerry) burial register.
Though in 1970 the Hughes family noted Mary Trow married John Hughes and subsequently died in childbirth at Kerry the certificate proves otherwise.

The registration at Oswestry states Mary Hughes died at Penybont, Llangedwyn. With no record of burial in Llangedwyn either I've put in for Daughter Elizabeths certificate...
