John MAYHEW, Francis HUBBARD, James BARRITT/BARRETT - Suffolk Families
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 07:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi looking for further information on any of the below people:

John Mayhew (Mahew) m 13th Oct 1772 Frances Hubbard
married at Stock Ash Parish, Suffolk

Would like to know of any ancestors of either John Mayhew or Frances Hubbard

Two known children (There could be more?)

George Mayhew bp 24th Nov 1775, Thorndon Maybe some one can find his marriage and death and census info?

Rebecca(h) Mayhew bp 31st Oct 1773 m  28th Jun 1792 m James Barrett/Barritt,

Rebecca was born in Sudbury, Suffolk

This is their son whom I already have traced
George Barrett born 15th Oct 1792 in Thorndon Suffolk, baptised 11th Nov 1792, died 12th Feb 1866

another son:

James Barrett b 8th Jan 1795 Thorndon Suffolk died 20th Dec 1876 in London England. Married 23rd May 1826 in London to Margaret Moorecock, witness William Barrett (Source for bp ancestry.com)

Who was the William Barrett?

and a daughter of James & Rebecca Barrett

Fanny Barrett, born 25th Feb 1797, bp 27th Feb 1797
Born at Thorndon, Suffolk No further info on her

Possibly

James Borrett (Barrett) m 6th Feb 1770 Elizabeth Woodward
South Cove Suffolk

maybe the parents of James Barrett who married Rebecca Mayhew?? Can anyone prove this?

See my other posting in Suffolk County re George Barrett's family.

Any help tracing or linking further names to the names in this posting is appreciated

Thank you

Hello Dunvr

This may be useful

From the Suffolk Burial Index:

Fanny MAYHEW abode Rishangles buried 28 May 1826 age 72 wife of John, Thorndon, All Saints.

John MAYHEW buried 31 May 1833 age 87, Thorndon, All Saints.

You say they were married in Stock Ash Parish church this would have almost certainly been the nearby village of Stoke Ash.

Hi K2

I think you may be on the right track here.

Question Could John Mayhew have married twice? 1st Frances Hubbard, 2nd Fanny? Or is Fanny and Frances the same lady?

Would Mayhew graves still be existent in Thorndon and surrounding areas?

Would like a testament for John Mayhew but could not locate one at National archives. Where can I get a will?

I note Rebeccah Barrett nee Mayhew called a daughter Fanny Barrett, could Fanny be named after Fanny Mayhew?

Very interesting, any help nailing down this ancestry appreciated.

Very likely to be one & the same person - Fanny was commonly used instead of Frances.  It was also quite common for children to be named after grandparents, parents, & parents siblings forming quite a useful way of helping to identify you are on the right track.

Graves would certainly still exist but whether or not they are marked is another matter.  The church may still have the records that could help you identify the plots.

Some more names here, can anyone add anything?

John Mayhew of Eye married in Thorndon 4th Oct 1739 Rachel Clements (Can anyone locate children of them?)

Probable father of

John Mayhew of Eye born abt 1746 buried 31st May 1833, age 77 m 13th Oct 1772 Frances (Fanny) Hubbard b abt 175? In 1772 John Hubbard witness the marriage cert.

Probable birth of Frances (Fanny) and siblings:

Parents  of below children are John (suggest he is bp 1727 shown below) and Frances Hubbard

William Hubbard bp 6th Dec 1747, at Stock Ash, Suffolk

Thomas Hubbard bp 25th Mar 1750, Suffolk

Frances: Fanny Hubbard bp 17th Nov 1752 at Sudbury, Suffolk married 1772 John Mayhew

Richard Hubbard bp 20th Sept 1755 at Stakerash, Suffolk

Dorothy Hubbard bp 28th Oct 1758 at Suffolk

Elizabeth Hubbard bp 22nd Mar 1761 at Stock Ash, Suffolk

The name Frances/Fanny seems to be passed from Hubbard to Mayhew to Barrett.

I suggest the Frances that marries John Hubbard abt 1746 that John Hubbard is this one:

John Hubbard bp 25th Apr 1727 at Wattisham, Suffolk son of John & Elizabeth Hubbard

Can anyone locate further siblings?

Also as I think I mentioned before I have:

James Borrett (Barrett) m 6th Feb 1770 Elizabeth Woodward
South Cove Suffolk

I found a possible child but not in Suffolk:

Name: James Barrott Gender: Male Baptism/Christening Date: 25 Jan 1771 Baptism/Christening Place: WRAWBY, LINCOLN, ENGLAND Parents James Barrott & Elizabeth

Is this possibly the James Barrot who married Elizabeth Wooward having a son in Lincoln? How possible would that be?

As in 1792 we have James Barrett marrying Rebeccah Mayhew in Thorndon. Thorn registers give a blank to children of James Barrott and  Elizabeth Woodward. Could they have had their issue in Lincoln or would that be a different couple?

Any help with these names appreciated

Thank you

Stoke Ash to the north and Stonham to the south - just two parishes between them.

You can buy a map 19th century parishes of Suffolk from the SRO - I think it was .50p.

I have several copies that I use in my work with SLHC too  ;D

Pat ...

Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

The Mayhew ancestors you have from Stonham would be related some how. On ancestry the Mayhew family of Suffolk descend from a Simon Mayo/Mayhewe/Mayhew thought to be born about 1455 in Wilts. His great grandson Mathew Mayhew c1550 - 1614 of Tisbury married an Alice Barter had several children one of whom Thomas Mayhewe born about 1593 has a son called Thomas Mayhew who ends up born 29th Oct 1637 in Hemmingstone Suffolk. He married a lady named Mary Withe and had several children born in Suffolk. One son John Mayhew born in 1671 in Bedingfield, Suffolk married Elizabeth Rush, then we have another group of their children, one John Mayhew b in 1714 later of Eye married Rachel Clements. Their son John Mayhew of Eye married Francis or Fanny Hubbard as posted in the other part of this posting. I found possible ancestors of Simon Mayhewe 1455. In 1132 one Simon Mayhew witnessed a document in Sittingbourne, Kent. In Oldiham 1342 & 1343 a Mathew Mayhewe has a son named John Mayhewe and a daughter named Agnes Mayhewe. Unfortunately I have not been able to link those earlier ones to the 1455 Simon Mayhew. If anyone would care to add details on the Mayhew lines in Suffolk and earlier Mayhew lines they should be all connected. Does anyone know of any early Mayhew Suffolk Monumental Inscriptions, graves etc? Would be grateful for pics. Also looking for images of the earlier Mayhew baptisms, marriages and deaths thank you

Hi

So the Mayhew family may have originated in Wiltshire then? I think the Samuel born in 1748 was the son of another Samuel Mayhew who wed a Mary Peake.

I think Samuel Mayhew Snr was born in about 1725 in Metfield son of John and Susan Mayhew. According to Ancestry John was born about 1694 in Linstead Parva.
