The problem is that the War Memorials will only show those who died?

OP wants a list of those who survived! ;D

What makes you assume that war memorials only show those who died?

For example the following shows not only those who died but those who served as well
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~framland/crof.htm

This South African War, 1899-1902, war memorial shows those who served
http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~framland/horsa.htm

Many war memorials show lists of men who served in the war(s) that they commemorate.
I found that out when I transcribed many hundreds of war memorials for the National Inventory of War Memorials in and around 2003/4
Cheers
Guy

PS try

Just use the keywords "who served"  without the inverted commas and nothing else

Interesting thread and thanks for that info Guy - our Welsh village wants to research those on our war memorial,  those who returned from WW1 as well as those buried in military graves here.  (There was a hospital in the village where many servicemen were treated.)  I've bookmarked this thread so I can come back again as the research goes ahead.

Kind regards
