Just a (possibly final) follow-up, it now appears Jane either travelled out to Australia on her own, or if she travelled with George Smith Marshall it was her son rather than her husband.  Sadly, George Snr was lost in Belgium in 1917:

The address of Anniston, Inverkeilor matches Jane's parents' long term address at Anniston (aka New Barns) Smithy and Inverkeilor is match for the birth of George Jnr in 1907.
