OK, so Scotlandspeople confirms the son was born in 1907 in Angus (I haven't pinpointed the exact town, but not Arbroath and not St Vigeans).

I think this further confirms the 1923 family are not my people as they would have brought the son with them.

From 1943 to 1977 George Smith MARSHALL and Hannah Jean are together at changing addresses in Qld and in 1972, another two one male and one female of the surname are at-
26 Westebroke St, Mt Gravat.

Sue

I get a male with almost but not quite the same name appearing at the same address in 1954 and separate addresses thereafter as well as the two others in 1972.

The 1954 name has family by 1977.

This has given me heaps to go on - thank you!

... and I've just realised of course I won't work out who the sisters are from the funeral notice as these will be their husbands initials!  Sorry, it was the excitement ...

However, George's sisters would appear to have been:

Mary Ann abt 1870
Jane abt 1873
Davidina abt 1880
Robina abt 1886
Maggie abt 1887
Annie abt 1894

One of these will be Mrs H Magee and one Mrs J Ramsay.  Something to look into in the future.

George Smith MARSHALL and Jessie Jean MARSHALL (with that name printed) do not appear on the electoral Rolls together. THOUGH---- this may be Jane

1930
95 Hassall St Parramatta
MARSHALL, George Smith,agent
MARSHALL, Janet, HD

1933
2 Grandview St Parramatta
MARSHALL, George Smith, Ins agent
EDIT to correct error
Webb St Parramatta, HD
MARSHALL, Janet, HD

I think these people are the 1923 family - from the shipping record that George was a salesman in Scotland so that fits with being an Insurance Agent.

Death notice of one George Smith MARSHALL with wife Jessie.

Interesting, this seems to be the indexed registration.  Not sure though.

10767/1938 MARSHALL Frederick Smith
Parents Robert and Christina
At RYDE

The notice here states the wife is Jessie McDougall with daughters Cxxxxxxxa and Sxxxxa just like the shipping record - Janet and Jessie are interchangeable in Scotland, so this is clearly the 1923 family again and not my people.

The second male is Robert Nicholson Marshall their son, deceased 1976.  I'll take a punt that the 2nd female is Robert's wife.

Wow - that's four sisters, then.

EDIT:  And I've just re-read and seen Mr J Marshall, so brother James as well.

Thank you so much again, Cup.
