Hopkin Mort alias Mordecai transported 1828
« on: Wednesday 19 November 14 22:48 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone any information on Hopkin who was sentenced to 7 years transportation in 1828. He was convicted of stealing a silver fork, even though he was only 11 years of age. I'm assuming that it was Australia he'd be sent to via Woolwich in London.  He was back in Swansea by 1837 where he got married. Any info would be very much appreciated.

The  Prison Hulk Registers  for Justitia state how a convict was disposed of. Many entries have NSW for New South Wales  but the entry for Hopkin Mort says Euryalus  , another prison hulk. A transcript of the Euryalus Register states he was received from Justitia 5 May 1828 . It also says that he died 15 Apr 1830 which is a puzzle ! In any event there appears to be no trace of him in Convict records in Australia.

A very interesting read about the conditions that the Boys had on Prison Hulks in this case the Euryalus.

Remarkable.  Job Jones is there.   That's very strange, because some people claim he came to Australia aged about 2 in 1820.

Many thanks for the prompt replies, and all the information that you supplied. Now I have an even bigger problem. This Hopkin Mort/Mordecai is obviously not my relative. I still haven't got around to believing that people come back from the dead. It was very interesting while it lasted, but now I'll have to go digging deeper. :-X ???

So your Hopkin Mort married 1837? Do you know his parents names?

I've found a family that fits the bill:-
Hopkin Mordecai b.1791 Llangyfelach.  D.1869
Mary Cousins b.1876 Freystrop, Pembrokeshire.  d.1863
Children:-
Jane. b1813
Anne b1816
David b1824.
I just hope I've got it right this time.
