John and Laura Griffith
« on: Sunday 24 August 14 11:02 BST (UK) »
Hi,I would love some information about my great great grandparents John and Laura Griffith of Hendy Sarn Meillteyrn, they married on the 18th of August 1857 in the parish of Denio.Laura was Jones before she married and was born in Glanmorfa or Glanmorfa Bach Abererch the daughter of Evan Jones,I do not have her mother's name.On the marriage certificate she resided at Penlan Bach Pwllheli she must have worked there.John Griffith was the son of Griffith Williams and lived in Tyncoed Abererch when he married,I think he was a labourer there.I would like to know where his family lived.I cannot find them on the censuses before 1861 .I would like to find their mother's names and if they had any siblings.Laura was born in 1836 and John in1821.

Jones, Catherine  Wife  F  42  b Glynop
Jones, Henry  Son  M  19  Farmer's son employed on the Farm  b Llanystymdwy
Jones, Margaret  Daughter  F  17  Employed at home  b Llanystymdwy
Jones, Laura  Daughter  F  14  Employed at home  b Llanystymdwy

Llanystymdwy is close to Pwllhelli.

Does this census match father's occupation on the marriage certificate?
Any witness names that match?

I had been looking at John Griffith, age 16, Mylltyrn on the 1841 Census (HO107  1388 9  4) - not living with family unfortunately. Across the page is a William Griffith, Tynycoed, age 60 with wife Elinor, 60. Below them is a Griffith Williams and family, Tyynmieri. But the Tynycoed on the '57 marriage cert is Tynycoed, Abererch. Tynycoed is a very, very common name, unfortunately.

The age 16 indicates it hasn't been rounded down (tho' no guarantee) which doesn't fit with the 1871 Census entry (age 50, born Meillteyrn)- although all other ages on the page are rounded down.

Hi,it looks very likely you have the right John here, there is a Tyn Muriau in Meillteyrn and nearby is a Tyncoed, perhaps it was was called Tynmieri in the beginning. Perhaps the Tyncoed on the certificate is a mistake and it should have been Meillteyrn and not Abererch.

A stone's throw from Glan-morfa bach in Abererch is Ty'n y Coed - it's on the 1891 map so it was quite possibly/likely there in 1857.

Just to clarify (a) where did they marry? (b) what was John's father's occupation? (c) what exactly is the entry for John under "Residence at time of marriage" (this is not necessarily where he may have lived).

1851 Census

Griffith Williams, age 45, occpn. farmer; Elinor, age 45; William, age 15; Margred, age 15; Elisabeth, age 12 and Cathrine, age 8.
Address - looks like "Tynymiria"  (attempt to capture "Tynymieri"?) - parish "Myllteyrn"

Don't have them in '51.
