Places in Killorglin
« on: Saturday 18 January 14 10:55 GMT (UK) »
My Finn line is from Ballyclave, Killorglin but I cannot find it on common maps or through Google. I also can't locate Buncare, Killorglin either.

Does anyone know of maps that will give these locations?

Also would they be townland names / parishes or something else?

Spillane - Milltown

My first thought is that Ballyclave is the townland of Ballintleave in the civil parish of Killorglin, I see associated references on the internet to Ballincleave and Ballycleave...

Edited to add:  Can you post your references?

There is also this reference to Ballycleave being part of the lands of Buncar in the barony of Magunihy:

If you look for Ballintleave in this website (below), about 1.5 miles west of the townland, in the townland of Treanoughtragh, is Buncar House (there are Finns in the civil parish of Killorglin, but not in the townland of Ballintleave):

Also this reference to Buncar House in the context of the Mahony family:

All a bit confused, I know, but I think we're in the right general area for your "Ballyclave" and "Buncare".

Hi Gaffy, thanks so much for all the information. It can get confusing with the number of names / areas, particularly the further back you go. I have two family lines in and around that area, and a few more within Kerry and I like to see them on a map just to get some perspective on it all.
Thanks again!  ;D

As it relates to the same family  /  area, I'll add this query to this thread.

My 2x great grandparents are presenting a stumbling block.
James FINN (1827-1912) and Julia CONNOR (1937-1913)
had the following children most in Killorglin
Patrick Finn 1863 –
Philip James Finn 1864 – 1928
James Finn 1866 – 1938
John Finn 1868 – 1935
Michael Finn 1870 – 1935
Thomas Finn 1872 – 1936
Mary FINN 1873 –
Daniel Finn 1876 –

With the eldest born in 1863, I guesstimate the marriage would have taken place in c1862, so how do I go about finding it? I have a strong possibility for James' parents being in/from Buncar but a few possibilities for Julia.

Kerry Diocese says all their records are at irishgenealogy.ie but the record is not there. Is it still worth contacting the church and, if so, which church? There is a St James in Killorglin but I haven't found a possible birth record for Julia from Killorglin and I know they usually married in the bride's church.

Any help / directions greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Would the following link not suggest that an 1850s marriage is more likely?

The following link doesn't mean that they are married, but for information this is possibly them cited as sponsors in the mid 1850s:

Thanks, Gaffy, you may well be right. Double checking the 1911 census, Julia states 9 children, 7 living. We've only ever had eight children on the list so Ellen may be the missing child. Now to find a death record and to see if it helps in finding a marriage.

Thanks again.

Not sure how a death certificate will help in finding a marriage as information on d.c. very sparse. See here for what you will find on Irish d.c.-

Oops. What I actually meant was to see if I could find a d c for Ellen to see if it fits the timeline and also to see if having Ellen in 1860, meant a 1850s marriage, as Gaffy suggested, rather than one in c 1862 as I had been looking for.
