McGaveston in Ireland

Im trying to trace the birth record and any family of one of my ancestors who said he was born in Ireland. He moved to New Zealand (we dont know when) and married Mary Ann White in 1862. Later he married Penelope Dean Wallis and had a ton of children. The following are the direct line descendants to me. I have mentioned them because in the records I could find from Ireland there is a similar name so I thought that may be John Cornwall McGaveston brother and my idea is that this name stayed in the family and Johns son and grandson had variants of this name. The name itself also seems to be uncommon so there could be a number of variants including MacGaveston. The McGaveston name in New Zealand only started with this family.

His name is John Cornwall McGaveston born 1844 in Ireland died 1925 in New Zealand

John Wynn McGaveston

On one of the tree's on Ancestry they have John Wynn McGaveston listed as a Doctor born 1798 died 1846 Dublin also his wife Margaret Page born 1818 died 19/4/1859 at Riwaka Tasman N Z .There is also mention of a brother Charles Wynn McGaveston born 1845 Dublin

Thank you for that. Ill order it. I just got John Cornwall McGavestons death certificate from New Zealand. It states his father was a medical practitioner and named John McGaveston and his mother was Margaret Page from Dublin, Ireland. It looks like John Cornwall McGavestons moved to New Zealand when he was 6 so I am assuming must have moved with his family/mother but I cant find a record of his fathers death in Ireland or mothers death in NZ nor record of them landing in New Zealand.

Very interesting, thanks! Lots of references to him working in India as an assistant surgeon and then later as a surgeon.

Thats one variant on the name I didnt try.

Thanks Annclare - thats one of the few I could find.

Its an odd surname for a family living in Ireland so I need to look at the orgin of the name as well to see if they moved there as within a generation the mcgavestons appear to be largely gone from Ireland.
