John IRVING- Dalton

Trying to find the parents of a John IRVING b. around 1781

Have looked on Scotland's People and the only one I can find is a Richard Irving - the only thing is, the name Richard doesn't follow through the children.

John died 23 December 1845, Dalton. Unable to find his death entry as it's before 1855.

The other query is:
On the 1841 census it has John IRVING aged 57 with navy p after his name. Can anyone please tell me what this is.

The address on for the 1841 census is Hyndgill Brae- Dalton Parish.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

At 57 I would guess 'P' is 'pensioner'.

I thought that as he had a headstone, his death would have been registered.

The only other info I have for John is:

He married a Isabella CARLYLE 4 Feb 1825 Dalton?  They had 10 children plus two who died in infancy named on headstone. Isabella died 1855 aged 54, Dalton. She was born at Hoddom.

Still not been able to find a birth for John Irving. I asked a lady in reference dept at the library. She explained the naming tradition back then - and his parents should or could be Thomas and Isabella Irving.

The naming with his wife parents, is correct.

If I could find his death entry it might shed some light.

Any help with this would be very much appreciated

I'm not sure if this will help but looking at the Farm Horse Tax Rolls 1797-98 for Dalton
http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/historical-tax-rolls/farm-horse-tax-rolls-1797-1798/farm-horse-tax-1797-1798-volume-02/162#zoom=3&lat=607.5&lon=1003.5&layers=B

there are two Irvings named - William at 'there', which I assume means Butterwhat from the previous entry, and John at Fourteenacres.

pollymann

Thank you for the information.

Not sure whether this helps as I don't know where John was born. The year 1782 matches with his death on headstone and the there were two births for 1782 - one in Cannonbie - parents William Irving & Elizabeth Irving. The the other in Graitney (Gretna) - parents James Irving & Jean Irving.

Going by the naming tradition, I should be looking for a Thomas & Isabella as parents.

Pauline,

Sorry about that. He lived in Dalton after they were married, I believe they were married there, too in 1825.
Thank you for taking the time to help. Very much appreciated.
